If you wanted to buy a brand new Indian motorcycle early in 1948 you had one option, the Chief, which was offered in three variations, the Clubman, the Sportsman and the Roadmaster. By the end of the year the Scout and Arrow were available and many consider those two models are what lead to Indian’s demise.
Powered by a 1210cc air cooled four-stroke V-Twin that produced 40 HP paired with a standard three speed transmission (or an optional 4-speed) it produced a top speed around 85 MPH. The rest of the packaged consisted of a plunger rear suspension, girder fork/springer front suspension, valanced fenders and a weight of 580 lbs.
