Description
According to classicbikehistory.com “The Triumph TRW is a 500cc Side Valve motorcycle which was designed in 1943 for use in the war effort. However by the time the bike was finished, the war was over and so Triumph was left with a surplus of bikes. In 1948 Triumph began supplying not only the British Army home and abroad, but also other forces all over the world until the 1960’s.”
Based on the Trophy, the TRW was a 500 twin specifically made for the British government as a military combat vehicle, the bike came with side-valves instead of the overhead valves found on other models of the era which made it more reliable and provided easier to fix in case of a failure. The bikes were known for their stealth and robustness. The bike also featured a BTH magneto for simplicity and reliability.
Motorcycle Classics said of the TRW “Engine: 499cc air-cooled, side-valve parallel twin, 63mm x 80mm bore and stroke, 6:1 compression ratio, 18hp @ 5,000rpm.” Fueling on this model is provided by a Single Solex WH2 26mm carburator and it boasts a dry weight of just 280 lbs making the bike capable of attaining a 70 mile per hour top speed.
Abhi actually saw this bike in the paint and made a video about it back in January of this year.
This example is VIN: 16783. The seller states “Here’s your chance to own an authentic slice of British motorcycling heritage. This 1948 Triumph TRW 500 is a true survivor — 100% original and untouched by modern restorations, making it an exceptional value for collectors and vintage enthusiasts alike. Lovingly owned by an avid collector for the past 15 years, this machine is as honest as they come. It starts, runs, and rides effortlessly, with the smooth character you’d expect from Triumph’s post-war engineering. The original 6v charging system remains intact and functional, preserving its historical accuracy. Time has left its mark in just the right way — a few scratches and blemishes give this bike an authentic patina that tells its story without diminishing its charm. The handgrips are cracked from age, but a new set is included in the sale should the next caretaker prefer a fresher look. While this TRW clearly dates from 1948 by all mechanical and visual indicators, its clear Illinois title lists it as a 1956, likely reflecting its first official sale or registration date and military recommission — a common quirk with military and surplus machines of the era. Opportunities to acquire an original, unrestored TRW 500 in this condition are becoming increasingly rare. Don’t miss out on this incredible chance to own a genuine piece of Triumph and military motorcycling history.”
The odometer shows 847 miles. The seller purchased the bike approximately 15 years ago and has covered 20 miles. He states “I have owned the bike for the last 15 years and bought it off a local father and son that collected military vehicles.”
Maintenance:
