BMW has long been in the touring game and the R60 helped solidify the reputation of long-distance reliability by their run from 1956 to 1960. This fact became undeniable when Danny Liska took an R60/2 from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego in the early 1960s. The book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance also features a BMW R60 on a cross country road trip from Minnesota to San Francisco.
BMW produced over 20,000 examples of the 600cc air cooled twin making 28 horsepower finished with a rare for the time shaft final drive.
This bike was designed with a sidecar in mind sporting a duplex tubular steel frame with built in mounting points for the sidecar.
This example is VIN: 620779. Engine: 620779. The seller states he “bought from an estate in Columbus Ohio 15 years ago.”
The odometer shows 369 miles, however true mileage is unknown.
Maintenance:
The seller states “Stem to stern complete restoration. Nothing left untouched. Motor work done by Rich Scheckler in Wayne Ohio. The motor, trans, final drive, and carbs were rebuilt. 500 miles since rebuild. New springs and shock.”
Modifications:
“This has a TR500 sidecar bought for my dog at the time at Vinatge days Mid Ohio. Benchmark Works in Sturgis MS set up the alignment of the sidecar. Swapped the aluminum wheels for steel wheels for use with side car. Painted in German police green.”
It is riding on Metzler tires which have aged out with date codes of 1210 and 1210.
