After its successes with the T110 and TR5 Trophy, Triumph debuted the TR6 Trophy in 1956. Specifically developed for the US market, it featured the same 650cc engine as the T110 along with the two-into-one exhaust, 7-inch front brake, and quick-detachable headlamp of the TR5.

It became famous for success in off-road racing, earning a nickname of “The Desert Sled” in the process. It was also a star of the silver screen – the famous motorcycle jump scene in “The Great Escape” was done by Bud Ekins (doubling Steve McQueen) on a TR6 Trophy.

Through 1961, the model was actually called Trophy-bird, a way of noting that the bike borrowed the bigger engine from Triumph’s Thunderbird model. Said engine utilized an alloy cylinder head and cast iron barrel and produced just over 40 horsepower.

These were easy to enjoy on the road, though all you needed to go off-road racing was to detach the headlight, install a less-restrictive exhaust, and swap on some knobby tires.

Said racers made the Trophy synomous with success, with victories in the Big Bear Run, Barstow to Vegas, and the National Hare & Hound Championship.
