Easily one of the most famous motorcycles to ever come out of Italy, the Laverda SF was a naked beauty built for racing. Per its factory designation, SF stood for Super Freni or “Super Brakes”.
The brakes weren’t the only aspect of the bike that were super. Laverda had their designer, Luciano Zen, strip down three of their closest competitor’s bikes, the Norton 650SS, the BMW R69, and of course the Honda CB77. Zen developed the 744cc engine using the company’s previous 650cc design and drew heavily from the Honda CB77 for its final iteration.
The SF replaced the previous S model and used an entirely new frame and the super brake system was designed by the founder, Dr. Francesco Laverda, himself. He used a twin leading shoe drum brake as opposed to the previous (and widely criticized) Gremica design.
Laverda also fitted a balance pipe to the exhaust system to equalize the exhaust flow between the right and left cylinders thus delivering smoother, more consistent power and mitigating any uneven pulses from either side of the engine.
This example is VIN: LAV750F8896. Engine: 7508896. The seller states, “I purchased the bike 25 years ago and have enjoyed riding and owning it. Due to medical concerns i can no longer ride it so it is time to move it to someone else to enjoy.”
During his ownership, the seller has covered 16,000 kilometers (9,941 miles). The odometer shows 38,851 kilometers (24,140 miles).
Maintenance:
Per the seller, “Frame modified by Wolfgang Haerter (North America Laverda specialist located in Nacusp BC) to accept SFC exhaust and center stand. Ported by Wolfgang Haerter and Paul LeClaire. Reliable and regularly ridden. Center stand stops, for when the stand is up, need repair. There is no key just a switch on top of the headlight to turn it on/off. Could use some fine tuning of the carbs. Rear turn signals are missing.” Dreamcycle has provided the following condition report:
Modifications:
“2 into 1 Stainless steel SFC exhaust (made by Gazelle for Palmelli SFC), Koni shocks, DMC electronic ignition, SFC center stand, chrome head lamp, Tarozzi rear sets.”
It is riding on Metzeler Lasertec tires with date codes of 0712 and 1312.
Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the album up top for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
“There is a 6 in long minor dent on the right side of the tank below the logo and to the back of the tank, you can only see it in the right lighting and it does not show up in photos. Various marks and chips in the paint.”
Currently located in Sorrento, British Columbia, Canada, this Laverda is offered on a clean Canada title. Have any 750SF stories or questions about this listing? Let us know in the “Comments” tab!
