1973 Yamaha DT3 250

Additional photos of this Yamaha DT3 are available here for your perusal.

In 1968, Yamaha revolutionized the world of off-roading with the DT1 250. Five years later, they introduced a successor: the DT3. In a period advertisement, Yamaha called the DT3 “the two best motorcycles you can own.” That was a play on its dual-sport nature and a reminder that it was capable both on and off-road.

It wasn’t just the marketing department doing their jobs – the press loved the bike as well. Cycle World called it “truly an incredible motorcycle,” noting that it “offers totally reliable off-road transportation. It’s ideal for traveling to some far-off ridge…just to see what’s on the other side.”

The single-cylinder two stroke engine pushed 24 horsepower through a 5-speed transmission, and by the introduction of the DT3 Yamaha had increased the diameter of the front wheel from 19″ to 21″.

For its debut year of 1973, the DT3 was adorned in Competition Green.

This example is VIN: DT1F151763, Engine #: DT1F-151763. The seller acquired it two months ago from a private party. “I sold this bike 15 years ago and bought it back a couple months ago.”

The odometer shows 2,511 miles.

I replaced the original Dunlop Trials Universal Tires with New Dunlop on/off road Trail tires and tubes. Changed engine oil and oil injection tank oil, new battery, front and rear sprockets and chain. Has new OEM Yamaha Air filter and updated petcock. The fuel tank is clean. Original paint and chrome. Starts runs and rides excellent. Lights, turn signals, horn and meters all work. Starts on first or second kick when cold, first kick when warmed up. Needs nothing, ready to ride.

Per the seller, this bike is stock.

Cosmetic Blemishes:
The paint and chrome are original so they have some minor defects and light corrosion. There are a couple of small chips in the paint on the tank which are barely noticeable.”

Inside of the tank:

The sale includes the owner’s manual.
