Description
Additional photos of this 1974 Honda MR50 Elsinore are available here for your perusal.
Honda produced the MR50 for just two years — 1974 and 1975 — during which time it was marketed as a gateway bike for future motocross talents. Based on the larger Elsinore competition bikes, it first arrived in Daytona Orange (really a red in color) and subsequently in a silver and red livery.
Powering the little pit bike was a 49cc two-stroke motor and a 3-speed transmission. With a humble 2 hp on-tap, it could cruise to a top speed of 26 mph. However, concerned parents could limit the rider’s speed by placing an allen screw in 1 of 4 stops on the throttle.
Because of their limited production, miniaturized looks, and potential for customization, MR50s quickly acquired an almost cult-like following. Moreover, it’s precisely because of the “Baby Elsinore” and other 50cc minis that we have Junior motocross classes.
This example is VIN: MR501005056. The seller purchased it two years ago from a salvage yard in Bakersfield, California.
True mileage is unknown. The seller states that the bike has not been ridden since the rebuild.
Maintenance:
The seller performed a complete nut and bolt registration in which he:
– Disassembled the engine, cases, cylinder, and head for vapor-blasting
– Repainted the covers in Honda silver cloud
– Installed a set of new bearings and seals
– Bored the top end with new pistons and rings
– Reassembled the engine with marine-grade stainless steel fasteners
– Rebuilt the carburetors (disassembled, vapor blasted, new gaskets and seals)
– Rebuilt and painted the front end with new seals and dust covers
– Vapor-blasted the wheel hubs and installed a new OEM front rim
– Re-laced the wheels and installed new bearings and seals
– Replaced the chain and hardware
– New seat foam and cover in OEM pattern
– Replaced the fenders, side cover, and heat shield
– Media-blasted and repainted the frame
– Media-blasted, cleaned, and repainted the exhaust
– Stripped and repainted the tank with new graphics and clear coat
His efforts even won him an award at this year’s Central Coast Classic Motorcycle show.
