With the days of the two-stroke slowly fading in the rearview mirror, Yamaha decided that it would bring back the engaging and exciting feel of a two-stroke, but wanted to wrap it up in a street-faring 4 stroke package.
So, in 1978, Yamaha had taken the success from their off-road market and made the SR500, a 4-stroke single cylinder middle-weight motorcycle that put up respectable numbers for the time. At peak power, the SR500 was good for 31 hp and 26 lb-ft of torque. The SR was an uncompromised motorcycle that rewarded the basics, and was unrelenting in it’s form.
This example is VIN: JYA4R800XBA001252. The seller purchased the bike from Mecum in January in 2018 and states, “Purchased for fun and part of the “500 Collection”, it was ridden on the now old and cracking tires from the shop to home and then stored.”
During his ownership, the seller has covered approximately 180 miles. The odometer shows 11,682 miles.
Maintenance:
Per the seller, “Fluids, battery(bad), rebuilt master cylinder and caliper.”
Modifications:
“Possibly replaced handlebars, oil temp cover. stainless steel front brake lines, tank knee pads.”
It is riding on Avon Roadrunner AM20 tires with date codes of 1906 and 2206.
