BMW boxers are a common starting point for customs ranging from mild to wild thanks to classic styling and (in R80 guise) a 50 hp engine known for reliability.
This example is VIN: WB1046401F6490047, Engine #: FBM079842C6. The VIN on the neck of the frame is no longer visible as the frame was powdercoated. The current owner acquired it from Jim Sylvester of Central California (the customizer) four months ago.
The odometer shows 82,466 miles.
This R80 was previously owned and customized by Jim Sylvester, who purchased it from an airline pilot in San Jose, California: “I was told that the heads had been sent to Ted Porter’s Beemershop for a cylinder head overhaul. I don’t have paperwork for it.” Jim completely stripped it down, and then:
Powdercoated the frame, wheels, valve covers, and chest plate in Brilliant Silver Metallic with a clear powdercoat over that.
Installed new fork seals, miscellaneous gaskets, flushed the fluids, and installed new Metzeler Lasertec tires with date codes of 0416 and 0916.
Installed Daytona Long reverse megaphones from FlatRacer in England.
Removed the airbox and installed small side covers.
Jim noted that the tank and tail paint is original: “you can see that the pinstripes have been slightly waxed off.”
Installed pod filters.
The bike was already equipped with the OEM BMW rear rack.
