Before 1986, MX in America was basically a lawless land. Companies could compete with a crazy one-off beast of a machine that would never see itself in the hands of the fans watching. But in 1986, a “production rule” debuted which forced companies to show up with bikes that would were being mass produced. According to PulpMX, this rule was requested by Yamaha because Honda was winning too much – Team Red had the ability to spend more and out-engineer anyone else. So when 1986 rolled around, everyone thought this was going to be the beginning of a new era for the other big teams in motocross. They were wrong.
At first glance the 1986 model looks like the 1985, but this was a whole different machine. Honda kept what was good from the years before (mostly the looks), and then redid everything else. While having had a power valve system in play with their older models, it never really worked the way they wanted it to. This was to increase exhaust pipe volume at low rpm’s, but a lot of owners ending up cutting out the weak, faulty system. To Honda’s luck they ironed this system out so that along with Honda’s new Honda Power Port (HPP) mill, they were able to crank out 38.4 hp, giving them the most powerful engine in its class.
Honda ditched their old style of front fork damping and switched to a cartridge fork system. This allowed hard impacts at high speeds to be much softer and not lock up like what the old system might do, and allow smooth, solid damping at low speeds.
While the MX rules were changed to bring Honda’s winning streak to an end, it ended up forcing Honda to create a 250 that defined the rest of the 80’s (and kept their winning ways in place).
This example is VIN: JH2ME0302GC805741. The seller acquired it in 1987 from a private party in Palmdale, California.
He rode it occasionally until 1992 and then parked it. There is no odometer, true mileage is unknown.
In preparation for the listing, the seller had us install a new air filter, change the oil/filter, flush the coolant, clean the carb, give it a detail, repair and plate the cylinder, install a new top end gasket set, rebuild the water pump, and install a Boyeson Racing crankcase cover. It also got Boyesen reeds and Wiseco piston/rings.

The sale includes a NIB front fender and rear fender.
