Launched in 1983, Honda’s XL600R was a hit with buyers much like the 500R before it. Sold for many years until finally being replaced by the long running 650L, the street-biased big thumper from Honda gave lots of riders a bike that not only could perform well both on and off the road but also had the looks of a motocrosser that many people desired. Usually adorned in Honda red, this 1986 was a one year only offering of the classic red, white, and blue scheme that has been a mainstay for many Honda models over the years. In addition to the tricolor paint, gold anodized wheels, fork lowers and swingarm rounded out the package along with an engine painted in red.
The XL600R featured a 589cc, 45 horsepower engine – Cycle World claimed they were able to hit 103 miles per hour with it. The XL shared many components with the off-road oriented XR bike, like the frame, brakes, Pro-Link rear suspension, Showa forks, skid plate, and more. The twin carbed RFVC radial valve air cooled engine could be difficult to start if you were not aware of the correct procedure, but it was bulletproof and easy to maintain. A 5 speed transmission helped the bike during highway stints and the big XR could return over 45 mpg which made it a good commuter. A testament to Honda engineering is the fact that so many of these 1980’s era XR’s are still on the road and in use today, clean ones are hard to find since many saw offroad duty, but Honda loyalists have managed to keep some very nice examples both in and out of collections over the years.
This example is VIN: JH2PD0305GK300296.
The odometer shows 13,487 miles.
The current owner purchased the bike in June of this year and has only put about 20 miles on the bike, he is selling it to thin down his collection. He recently sold a Yamaha XT350 with Iconic Motorbikes.
Emgo mirrors, aftermarket fork gaiters. The Honda decals have been removed from the side covers and headlight cowl.
The exhaust has been painted.
Mechanical Issues: The seller notes the following: “The chain guard was removed as the rear tire was rubbing it against it. The bike has had a recent oil change and the brake fluid replaced, it runs well and idles good once warmed up.” The chain guard is currently off the bike, but it is included with the sale.
“The tires are from 2015 and still have considerable tread on them.”
The seller describes this XL600R as “having normal wear for its age, miles and use.” There is some paint wear and fading on the engine.
Minor boot wear on the frame.
Small flaw in paint on the fuel tank.
Small scratch on swingarm.
Repaired crack in the left rear turn signal housing.
Inside of the tank. The seller notes that the tank has been lined – it’s not with Kreem or POR-15, but he’s not sure what.
The sale includes a Haynes workshop manual, one original Honda key, and the original tool kit holder but there are no tools included.
