Additional photos of this 1987 Yamaha YZ250 are available here for your perusal.

American motocross wouldn’t be the same without the Yamaha YZ250. For even though it started life as little more than an experimental DT-1 adaptation, it’s since evolved into one of the most influential dirt bikes in the sport today. Developed by racers, for racers, it was originally built in 1974 by Don Jones for his son Gary. After capturing the first AMA Motocross Championship that year, the bike then made its way back to Japan to inform the design of the production platform.

Never content to rest on its laurels, however, Yamaha continued to refine the YZ250 year after year. Naturally, then, the bike is responsible for introducing a number of novelties to the sport of motocross, including reed valves, mono-shock suspension, and power valves (amongst a long list of others).

This particular example is significant because 1986 brought a complete redesign to the YZ platform. Between a new chassis, an updated set of bodywork, and some fresh internals on the motor, it made for a marked upgrade over the previous year. Additionally, Yamaha fitted the front fork with a hydraulic brake and relocated the rear shock. For 1987, Yamaha gave the motor a massive bump in low-end power.

Of course, no YZ250 discussion would be complete without mention of the competitors who put the bike on the mainstream map. As Dirtbike Magazine puts it, “Perhaps more than anything, the YZ250 is known for the legendary riders who used it to win.” So, along with Gary Jones, Bob Hannah, and Mike Bell, it’s also served the likes of Hakan Andersson and Danny LaPorte.

This example is VIN: JYA2HH004HA003677.

Because there is no odometer, true mileage is unknown. However, the seller states that, in addition to a carb clean, the bike has also received a fresh oil change.
