Upon its debut in 1991, the 900SS proved a resounding success due to the exotic Italian styling and punchy performance. As is typical of Ducati, however, the best means to market the bike was to produce a limited edition numbered variant. Accordingly, the Bologna-based firm released the 900 Superlight (SL) just a year later.

Originally, Ducati only planned to released 500 examples; over time, that number grew to around 900.

Though it featured the same engine, frame, and suspension as the standard 900SS, the Superlight boasted a variety of choice extras. Moreover, throughout the model’s production life, Ducati released several iterations — beginning with the Superlight I and culminating with the Superlight IV in 1995. The Superlight II (like the one being offered here) featured Brembo wheels and a floating rear disc brake set up. According to Ducati expert Ian Fallon, 325 MK 2s were built in 1992 and an additional 250 in 1993.
