In 1999, Ducati updated the instant-classic 916 with a larger motor and a corresponding name change to 996. The new model debuted with three models, the middle of which was the “S”.
Per Motorcycle News: “Everything about owning this design icon feeds my love for it. For the 2001 model year, the US got a different version of the 996S than Europe did. The States got the stock motor but it was complemented with Ohlins suspension (forks/steering damper/shock) as well as grey Marchesini wheels and some carbon fiber pieces. It also got a plaque on the top triple denoting that it’s a “USA” model.
Visually, the US model was set off by a tricolore livery on the front and tail.

“I bought this motorcycle from an individual in the North East who had acquired the motorcycle from the owner. I had the bike shipped to Austin where it went to Ducati Austin for a full Desmo service. The motorcycle was then sent to a detailer who went end to end on it, cleaned polished or replaced any and all parts to make the motorcycle look as if it just rolled off the assembly line. I bought this motorcycle as a collector bike so I have never registered it.”

“Full Desmo service, belts, oil, every fluid changed, all lines checked.”
