Introduced in 1999, the Falco was a sporty road bike that slotted into Aprilia’s line-up between the sport touring Futura and the supersport RSV Mille.
Like both of those bikes, the Falco utilized a 996cc Rotax V-Twin engine – in this application it was good for 118 horsepower and 70 ft-lb of torque.
Aprilia updated the model for 2002 with a “R” designation- it was mechanically the same but it got some cosmetic updates. As Motorcyclist magazine put it, “while the previous Falco–with simple painted bodywork, a silver frame, and the odd exposed bits and pieces in a Crayola 64-box of different hues–seemed a mishmash, the new Falco R appears remarkably more sleek and cohesive. Credit the anthracite paint on the frame, the tasteful matte-black finish on the tank and tailsection, and the more careful color-coordination of the oily bits. There’s no mistaking the bike’s lineage thanks to the Mille-esque fairing (packing three headlights) and a flat-topped plastic fuel tank, but this year the Falco cuts a color profile all its own.”
The Falco competed against bikes like the Honda Super Hawk and the Suzuki TL, but Aprilia packed it with components like Sachs/Showa suspension, Brembo wheels, and Brembo brakes. MCN summed up the Falco by saying, “Less is sometimes more. By making its roadster less extreme than the RSV Mille sportster it’s based on Aprilia broadened its appeal and produced a motorcycle that’s both easier and more fun to ride.”
