The successor of the YZ400F, the newer YZ426F introduced features that allowed it to stand among giants, those being the tried-and-true 2 strokes of the era. Yamaha 3 years before the 2002 ventured into the 4 stroke motocross scene with the YZ400F.

It suffered from similar problems as most of the 4 strokes of the time – weight, shoddy idle and fueling with carbs, and lack of mid-flight maneuverability. Yamaha went back to the drawing board to create a motorcycle that improved in all aspects. Introducing: the YZ426F.

The newest bike from the blue brand’s stable introduced a lighter weight from the previous editions, better idling and fueling across the lower ranges to allow faster and smoother acceleration due to the introduction of titanium valves, and some key carburetor changes that improved the hot start issues. Many folks soon realized the potency of these newer machines that had tons of innovation thrown into them. Motorcycle Daily had this to say about the newest bike on the block: “It absolutely snaps out of corners while retaining the smoother delivery of a four-stroke and the easier throttle control compared to a two-stroke. 250cc two-strokes have absolutely no chance of hanging with the YZ426F exiting corners.
