New for 2002, the CRF450R was Honda’s first production four-stroke MX bike and the lightest bike in class at the time. Dirt Bike magazine said, “We loved the first CRF right out of the gate…it wasn’t the first, and it hasn’t always been the best or the fastest, but the Honda CRF450R is the poster child of American motocross. It has been almost from the day it was released in 2002.”
It took Honda five years to counter Yamaha’s four-stroke challenger (the YZ400F), but their CRF was lighter (15 pounds) and easier to ride than Yamaha effort, which was the YZ426F by that point. It was also much easier to start. The all-new motor weighed 65 pounds and featured Honda’s Unicam SOHC design.
PulpMX considers this one of the most important MX bikes of all time, profiling it in their “Classic Steel” series: “The new CRF turned four-stroke skeptics the world over into true believers overnight.”
This example is VIN: JH2PE05A15M301532. The seller purchased the bike from a friend and states, “I work as Head of Mechanics and love designing and building a bit weird race inspired motorcycles. I have been rebuilding and redesigning bikes since my first TZR125 that got a unique solo seat. The “CRF Tracker” was built with the vision to make the most minimalistic Street Tracker possible! The idea was that it should be regarded as only frame, engine and fat wheels. Nothing else. Engine visible straight down for the rider. Invisible gas tank. No padded seat. Minimalistic Extreme.”
There is no odometer, true mileage unknown.
Maintenance:
The seller states, “New valves and valve seals for robustness as it was a common problem on the early CRFs. Other than that the regular stuff, oils and coolant. 450cc torquey Honda 4 stroke thumper that spits fire through the FMF underslung custom exhaust and muffler. Weight below 95kg.”
Modifications:
Carbon fiber bodywork and gas tank.
All small covers made in CAD and the 3D printed. Supported with sheet metal brackets.
LED taillights and headlight ring with CAD designed base that was 3D printed and painted.
Inside of the tank:
“It is pretty small hole into the gas tank as I made the CNC aluminium gas cap thread fitting as a copy of one in sheet metal mainly done for Harley custom choppers etc. There is epoxy overflow from the manufacturing process on the aluminium thread fitting that could look odd if you don’t hear my explanation.”
It is riding on Golden Tyre GT267 tires which have aged out.
