For years, BMW dominated the adventure bike market with their GS lineup. However, KTM was able to fight back in the 90s (after coming out of bankruptcy) because they decided to focus on off-road capability – taking expertise from an impressive line-up of dirt bikes and incorporating that into a new line of adventure motorcycles.

With each generation, BMW kept adding more features designed to help with on-road touring. KTM stuck with their “Ready to Race” motto and focused on building off-road capable machines that were still street legal.

KTM had been playing with the idea of a large-displacement V-twin adventure bike since 1993, but the 950 Adventure wasn’t released until 2003. It was powered by a 942cc liquid-cooled 74-degree V-twin engine with dual overhead cams producing over 100 hp, all in a sleek Dakar-styled package.
