Click here for an VINData Motorcycle History Report on this 2017 Ducati Multistrada 950.
When Ducati debuted the original Multistrada in 2003, the bike made for a dramatic departure from the firm’s usual offerings. Named after the Italian word for “many roads,” the model combined a unique aesthetic penned by Pierre Terblanche with comfortable touring geometry and luggage hauling provisions.
Aiming to create a perfect bike for the notorious Futa Pass, the Multi essentially defined the Adventure Sport Touring category. While some argue a Japanese firm did it first with the Fazer 1000, XJ900 Diversion, V-Strom 1000, Bandit 1200, or Varadero 1000. It was Ducati who nailed the versatility between urban, sport, enduro, and touring.
Originally launched as the 1000DS, a smaller 620 was soon offered in 2005. After the 620 was retired in 2007, Ducati then consistently added larger powerplants throughout the years with the release of the 1100 in 2007 and the 1200 in 2010, which was powered by a revised Testastretta motor as found in the 1198 superbike.
Although the 1200 was near universally loved, the 950 was released in 2017 to attract new riders at a more approachable price point. Nearly $3,000 less than the 1200, the 950 essentially removed a few bells and whistles, increased the front tire size from 17-inces to 19-inches, and borrowed the 939 Hypermotard desmo V-Twin engine. If you’d like to know more, check out CycleWorld’s First Ride Review where they note, “For someone who is looking for a bike to ride to work during the week, and for sport on the weekend, with some two up and touring rides sprinkled in, this would be a great choice.”
