Yamaha’s FZ1 enjoyed an incredible 15-year run; however, come 2017, it was time for a refresh. What resulted was the FZ-10, a top-tier naked model based on the YZF-R1, one of the finest superbikes on the planet.
For the engine, Yamaha gave the 998cc in-line four smaller intake ports and valves, a new camshaft, and a new combustion chamber. Taken together, such changes resulted in an 18 percent gain in torque between 4,000 and 8,000 rpm when compared to the R1.
And that’s not all: the FZ-10 also benefitted from a softer suspension setup and and a more upright riding position, both traits designed to make ripping corners even more enjoyable. What’s more, Yamaha lowered the pegs for more legroom, lowered the seat 1.2 inches, and raised the handlebars some 10 inches compared to the R1. As Motorcyclist put in its review: “long story short, this bike is awesome fun to ride. It’s comfortable, agile, stable, and the engine absolutely cracks to life in the midrange. It seems louder than an R1—I think because it makes power earlier in the revs and it’s geared shorter, so that brilliant crossplane snarl is more accessible. Stepping back, maybe the most impressive part of this bike is that when you ride it you can feel all of the little adjustments that the engineers made. It’s a much more enjoyable and complete machine than it would have been if Yamaha had simply put a flat handlebar on its flagship superbike.”
