In 2014, Yamaha released a new standard that was an instant hit – the FZ-09 offered an impressive amount of performance for the price, immediately being named Best Middleweight by Cycle World in 2014 and then Best Standard in 2015.
As Cycle World put said, the FZ (later renamed to MT to sync up with the Masters of Torque designation in other markets) “epitomizes sporting all-rounder, serving as a fine commuter, back-road scratcher, or even a trackday mount…you’d be hard-pressed to find a greater performance-per-dollar value on two wheels. And its three-cylinder powerplant might be the most spirited and fun street engine we have ever sampled, a great helping of its 108 horses and 62 pound-feet delivered right now any time you twist the throttle. It’s a bike that does it all and will make you smile every time you ride.”
A significant update came in 2017, giving the MT-09 improved suspension front and rear (compression damping was upped by 83%!), a new subframe, more comfortable seat, standard ABS and traction control, slipper/power-assist clutch, and an optional quick-shifter.
Manufactured April 2019, this example is VIN: JYARN53E3KA006297. The seller purchased the bike June 2023 from Fremont Motorsports in Florence, Colorado, and states, “I was informed the previous owner was a retired gentleman in his 60s and a motorcycle enthusiast, who had a collection of 5 or 6 other street bikes. A blue MT-09 was my dream bike, I purchased it while living in Colorado (as my 3rd motorcycle) to ride the canyon roads and take it on a handful of small roadtrips. It was always garage kept, never wheelied, never dropped, regularly cleaned.
In an ideal world I could keep this bike for much longer but it doesn’t get enough use to justify. I plan on down scaling to a smaller cc engine, possibly a dual sport. I don’t get to enjoy this bike to its fullest in my current lifestyle and riding habits. I just recently moved to California and had a lot of lifestyle changes, hoping to give it a new home where it will be enjoyed.”
During his ownership, the seller has covered approximately 5,000 miles. The odometer shows 7,402 miles.
Maintenance:
The seller states, “I have done two oil and filter changes, with receipts of materials. Also new Michelin pilot tires purchased last August with a couple hundred miles on them.” The seller also brought the bike to Iconic for a safety inspection.
