After seeing the growing popularity of street-biased hyper-adventure bikes, BMW decided to throw their hat into the ring with the S1000XR. First introduced at at EICMA back in November 2014, the model entered showrooms in June the following year.
Despite its obvious GS inspirations and familiar 33.1-inch seat height, the S1000XR did not feature the German manufacturer’s trademark boxer twin. Instead, BMW opted for the same tried-and-true in-line four as used in its sportbike platforms like the naked S1000R and the full-faired S1000RR. As a result, it boasted some sizable performance figures — to the tune of 160hp and 83lb-ft of torque.
For this reason, the S1000XR was not engineered to compete with the venerable GS line; rather, it was intended for 95% on-road use — a platform for spirited canyon carving and long days in the saddle. As MCN found in its review: “It’s upright, practical and comfortable with RR-like speed, handling and braking performance. Add in typical BMW style, build quality and a bewildering amount of optinal goodies to make your day, safer and more comfortable and you’ve got yourself a formidable all-rounder.”
