Up until early 2021, GasGas was a niche brand best known for its trials bikes. However, that quickly changed when the Spanish outfit became a part of the KTM and Husqvarna family. In no time at all, GasGas began dominating motorcycling across the board, seeing success in AMA Supercross, MX, and even Moto3. Not only that, but the brand also launched two new street bikes: the SM 700 supermoto and the ES 700 dual sport.
Unfortunately, the 2022 models were pretty limited in their distribution, so those of us here in the U.S. never got to appreciate the fruits of the company’s labors.
For 2023, though, GasGas has made its way stateside with streetbikes — and with it, the SM 700. Because it’s based on the KTM 690/Husqvarna 701, the bike shares practically all of its componentry with its cousins. As such, it utilizes the same liquid-cooled four-stroke single, a tried-and-true 693cc thumper good for 74hp and 54lb-ft of torque. The suspension, too, is pulled from the KTM parts bin, consisting of a 48mm WP Apex fork up front and a fully adjustable WP Apex shock at the rear.
In order to keep things rubber-side down, the SM 700 features a suite of electronic rider aids. So, along with a up-and-down quickshifter and lean-sensitive ABS, it also comes with traction control and a six-axis IMU. Expectedly, the SM 700 sports a ‘Supermoto’ mode that makes it more accepting of those inevitable rear-wheel drifts and wheelies.
