Honda debuted the CBR family in the 90s with the CBR400RR and the CBR900RR, machines engineered to introduce Honda’s “Total Control” concept. Blending responsive engine performance with low weight and precision handling, they laid the foundation for the first CBR1000RR in 2004. Since that time, the CBR1000RR has continued to push the boundaries of what a homologation special can be. The 2021 CBR1000RR-R SP (informally known as the “pirate” on account of its abundance of “R’s”), in particular, set a new standard for the lineup, borrowing tons of state of the art tech from Honda’s MotoGP bikes.

At the heart of the platform is a powertrain inspired by the RC213V-S replica. Thanks to trick components like lightweight titanium connecting rods and forged aluminum pistons, it puts out a claimed 186hp and 83 lb-ft. of torque. And, even despite its adherence to noise and emissions regulations, it revs to a sonorous 12,000rpm.

Geometry wise, Honda made some notable changes with the 2021 Fireblade. So, in addition to an aluminum diamond frame, it also boasts features like a longer swingarm stamped from 18 thicknesses of aluminum, as well as an Öhlins semi-active suspension setup. As if that wasn’t enough, Honda switched up the ergonomics for a more aggressive riding position, moving the footpegs further back and lowering/angling the handlebars.

All that is to say, the CBR1000RR-R SP means business. As Rider Magazine found in its review, The triple-R is undoubtedly the most aggressive Fireblade yet, and what many have begged for over the years. Importantly, it retains the rideability that we’ve come to expect from Honda, albeit with extra edge to cut into the success of its competitors on the world stage.”
