Fourth up today for the auction site's an uncommon YZF-1000R “Thunderace” that was only released by Yamaha for one year - and this one's guaranteed to find a new home! It's from 1997 and it's available for bid now with NO RESERVE on iconicmotorbikeauctions.com

The Yamaha YZF1000R, known outside of the US as the Thunderace, was the bike which bridged the gap between legendary FZR1000 and even more legendary R1. Quite uncommon to see because it only sold in the US for just one year.

It was basically the FZR1000 engine in the much more common YZF750R frame. Normally with a 1-year only bike, parts are scarce, but as this bike was made, in essence, with pieces from other common Yamahas, finding parts is of little concern. From MCN – “The Yamaha Thunderace started out as Yamaha’s last throw of the old school superbike dice, and resulted in the final incarnation of the FZR1000 EXUP. But ironically the Thunderace has proved to be a better big bore sports touring motorcycle than out-and-out superbike – albeit a humongously fast one.”

Yamaha wanted to produce a bike lighter than then outgoing FZR1000, and at 435lbs the Thunderace was the lightest liter bike upon release. Yamaha also boasted of the aerodynamic specs of the newly designed fairings with a drag coefficient of only 0.29, comparable to their YZR500 GP machine. These features, combined with a shorter wheelbase than the FZR1000, made the machine nimble through corners and quick on turns.

Maintenance:

Tuesday's 3rd auction going live is a super clean example of Aprilia’s limited production Tuono RSV-R! This one's from 2003, #191 of 200 and draped in carbon fiber! It's available for bid now on Iconicmotorbikeauctions.com

The Aprilia Tuono is a motorcycling legend now, but it was rolled out in many small stages. It started as as a limited run of a Streetfighter kit for the Falco in 2001, and the following year Aprilia officially created the Tuono (officially called the Tuono Mille RSV-R Limited) with a numbered run of approximately 200.

When the Limited was initially launched, Aprilia told the press that they were going to make 200, 50 of which were slotted for the US. 135 were built in the first run, with roughly another 100 in a second run. Soon after, Aprilia would create the base model Tuono and the Tuono Racing, and the rest is history. This bike is #191.

The Limited got the full-power RSV-R engine and was upgraded with Ohlins suspension front and rear plus a steering damper, OZ lightweight wheels, carbon fiber bodywork, Matte Diablo black paint on the tank, Aprilia Racing exhaust with EPROM chip, seats covered with an exotic Kevlar-based fabric, frame sliders, and an exclusive gold frame/swingarm color (or as the Italians called it, “oro metalizzato opaco”).

Back in the early 1980s, a mechanical engineer by the name of Bill Davis had been experimenting with a V-twin frame design that gave riders the custom chopper look with the added benefit of some hidden rear shocks. Harley-Davidson liked Davis’ design so much, in fact, that they bought his design patents and brought him onboard to perfect the concept.

Come 1984, Davis’ frame finally made it to production in the form of the Softail. Like his design, it appeared to be rigid at first glance; beneath the curvaceous rear fender, however, it featured some pull-shocks. Needless to say, the bike proved immensely popular — it quickly became one of the best-selling models in Harley-Davidson’s lineup. Between the added comfort and the improved performance, it was — in a word — a revelation.

The seller is the original owner and purchased the bike new in 2021 from Huntington Beach Harley-Davidson and states, “I love that bike to death, I really don’t want to sell it at all. That thing is a monster of a Harley. It is insanely fast and stupidly fun. It’s hard to explain in words how that bike feels until you ride it and can’t get the grin off your face.”

First to go live for the Iconic Motorbikes auction site today's an ultra rare tank are from a legendary collection of illustrious bikes! This Parc Ferme piece of wall art is that of a 1995 NSR250R SP, and it's available for bid now on Iconicmotorbikeauctions.com

In 1991, Honda split the base and SP models of the NSR250R with the introduction of the SE (Super Edition) model. They had all of the SP goodies (dry clutch, adjustable suspension, special livery) except for the magnesium wheels.

In 1994, the Japanese firm updated the NSR with an all new model dubbed the MC28. The result was arguably the ultimate 250cc street bike in Japan thanks in no small part to the PGM-IV ignition and Pro-Arm single sided swingarm. Also notable was the memory card used to start the bike.

These unique wall art tanks are produced by Parc Ferme Moto Art. The artist has been a good friend of Iconic’s and Bike-urious for over a decade and has produced an extremely unique and limited production run of gas tank wall art available exclusively through Iconic Motorbike Auctions.

The art piece measures 35″x24″x9″ and our transport department estimates shipping from our warehouse in Santa Monica to the continental US be around $150 via Fedex ground. The seller states “This is an original 1995 NSR250 MC28 fuel tank, part of the Parc Ferme MC28 SP series. From 1 of the 1500 Honda Rothmans SP’s that were made. Despite my best efforts this tank was not able to be saved which was a blow as MC28 replacement tanks are very dear these days. So off to grab the grinder and cut it in half. Lots more time was spent banging it back to the original shape, and then painting with reproduction Rothmans decals. The stitching on the synthetic carbon backing material mimics the colors in the original Honda paint scheme. A MC28 credit card decal along with SP decals finishes it of, this is #2/2, I am going to keep #1.”

Moving the techs, the bikes and the last of the furnishings is a cakewalk compared to that container structure move. Most certainly one of those “many times” in my life where I thought…What the heck was I thinking? Hahahhaa

I can’t wait to show you what I have planned for the new building! My awesome wife was already talking about looking into buying the building next door for a rental until we need it! Hahahha…. Love that girl so much :).

What a DAY!!!

Huge progress at our new HQ and since we bought this building, I made some pretty big plans for it….Granted…I did ask myself a few times today…WTH was I thinking???Hahahaha.

How cool is this..the new black ceiling with the foil paper looks awesome. We have way more space for iconic MotoMarket with all these shelves. Upstairs of the tech / garage area just needs the carpet tiles installed and we have a rather large 800 sq ft room for shop poop parts storage.

We bought some new steel blades and a new skill saw so time to cut some doors and windows into the structure… I’ll handle that personally. It won’t be long now!

Welcome aboard Tico, heck of a first day my man but you were a big help. Thank you!

Fourth to close on the Iconic Motorbikes auction site Tuesday's a totally custom build on a modern day cult classic BMW; an R NineT Cafe Racer that's sure to turn heads! This one's from 2016 and it's available for bid until 1PM PST on Iconicmotorbikeauctions.com

Initially introduced in 2014, the BMW R nineT was such a surprise hit that it eventually led to an entire family of bikes – but the original is the best in terms of components.

A dual exhaust, inverted forks, spoke wheels, aluminum fuel tank, and dual gauges (including tachometer) differentiate the model from future variants, all of which were given cheaper price tags and lower specifications to match. It’s a rare case of the original standard being the flagship model. The R nineT (in any form) is a good choice for someone who wants to do some customization.

Purchased four years ago at Rosso Corsa in Orange County. The seller states he has covered “only 200 miles since I bought it. It’s just a show piece. Someone should enjoy it.” The bike has approximately 2,408 miles and the instrument cluster was changed for the Moto gadget unit 657 km ago. We are providing proof of original mileage from the time of the sale using the registration documents which were filed in Montana documenting the bike at 2,000 miles.

Iconic's 3rd auction to finish on our site Tuesday: an uncommon red and black ZXR750 that's been outfitted with a full Vance & Hines exhaust system, and more! This iconic Kawasaki's from 1989 and it's available for bid until 12PM PST on Iconicmotorbikeauctions.com

In 1988, Kawasaki debuted a 750cc racebike called the ZXR-7. The following year, they released a production version – overseas, it was called the ZXR750. Here in the states, we knew it in the US as the Ninja ZX-7.

The 748cc inline four engine produced 105 horsepower inside of an aluminum perimeter frame. Performance Bikes magazine saw 91 hp at the rear wheel with a 152 mph top speed in a 1989 test. Crucially, it was easy to ride (though the rear suspension was quite stiff). As noted in a period review, it was “one of the few modern 750s that can be ridden to its maximum in comparative safety.”

As Classic Motorbikes puts it in its review: “In keeping with Kawasaki’s wild and raucous two-stroke machines, the ZXR750 is a thoroughly raw and untamed beast. The engine develops its 100 plus horses in way that never fails to excite while the chassis barely keeps it all in check, adding up to a breath taking journey every inch of the way. It is hard, if not impossible, to ride the ZXR in a manner less than the pure lunatic.”

The seller imported the bike from Japan one year ago and states, “Bought this upgraded ZXR750 for the gorgeous and hard to find red/black body panels.” During his ownership, the seller has covered approximately 100 miles. The odometer shows 54,941 kilometers (34,138 miles).

Maintenance:
Per the seller, “Rerouted wiring harness to proper position, cleaned and detailed bike.”

Ted Gadecki is a Portland, Oregon-based artist who’s been creating a series of exotic motorcycle paintings, and several have been listed and sold on Iconic. Ted also offers Limited Edition prints of these paintings, which are produced at Pearl Printing in Portland, a shop that specializes in fine art prints. His paintings and Limited Edition prints have been displayed at galleries and motorcycle venues, including the ONE shows in Portland, Oregon and Mazda Raceway in Salinas, California. Below are paintings Ted has sold on Iconic and to other private collectors.

Today, Ted is offering an original painting of an MV Agusta 750 America. The painting measures 36x36″, using acrylic paint on stretched canvas.

This one is from yesterday and wholly smokes that was “beating of a day”.

Started before 5AM. Wrapped up at iconics hangar (moving the container outside) by 8AM and then we all hightailed over to @pinaprops to finish building the container structure.

We had THREE container transporters booked to bring the next 6 containers to iconics new building and no place to store them so we need to work fast and hard to get them into our spot as all three drivers can’t work Monday.

We wrapped up at 9 or 10 last night.

A HUGE thank you to the @iconicmotorbikes team, some of our Iconic members, our clients & even our share holders for all the help!! So grateful for all my mates coming through when I needed them most at Iconic & @pinaprops …I’ll never forget that!

I’ve been a bit behind on posts so time to catch up.

These next few videos are short recaps to what we’re up to this weekend and WHAT A WEEKEND IT WAS!

We started this on Thursday, I personally averaged 16-20 hours a day since with just short 30-1 hour naps at night after catching up on emails, social media messages and banking stuff. Phew!

I took a sleeping pill at midnight last night just to get me SOME sleep and got in a full 5 hours which NEVER happens to me. Boy do I feel great and ready to roll!

When Yamaha debuted the RZ500 (known in some other markets as the RD500) in 1984, it was arguably the first production race replica.

Built to emulate Kenny Roberts’ YZR500 factory racer, the RZ500 was the closest thing two-stroke enthusiasts had to a GP competitor for the road… as long as you didn’t live in the United States of America. Emissions rules put in place by the EPA prevented Yamaha from selling the RZ500 in the US, so the select few we get to enjoy had to be imported (typically from Canada).

This particular bike has been completely restomodded by Wilson Performance in Lee’s Summit MO in November of 2024. Bill Wilson states “The engine had been rebuilt previously by me in 2010 when owned by Paul Huber. A Blueprint rebuild was performed at that time. From the looks of the pistons there had not been too many miles put on the bike since the rebuild.” Bill has graciously agreed to answer any questions about this build and is also willing to do a similar build for someone else down the road. He states “WP prides itself on offering the best performance and rebuild services for the RZ500 anywhere.” Please see the modifications section for a complete build list of all of the parts as well as the proper startup procedure.
