Hitting our auction site third today’s a highly stock turbo Kawi that comes with an upgraded fuel system! This Kawasaki KZ1000 Z1R TC-1.5 is from 1978 and it’s available for bid now on Iconicmotorbikeauctions.com

TCC stood for the Turbo Cycle Corporation, and it was created to sell bolt on turbos for motorcycles built by American Turbo-Pak. The founder of TCC was a former Kawasaki USA employee named Alan Masek, and he used his contacts to help develop the first ‘production’ turbocharged bike. Kawasaki’s Z1-R was their top of the line bike but Alan figured he could make a true halo and sell some turbos in the process.

The plan was to source bikes from Kawasaki, install the turbo kit, then have Kawi sell the new Z1R-TC through dealerships (but without a warranty). TCC made some money, Kawasaki got bragging rights, and no one had to worry about warranty costs or emissions issues.

500 were built, the first 250 of which were in the stock powder blue of the Z1-R. The remaining 250 were adorned in the iconic black/yellow/red Molly Design paint scheme and boasted some mechanical refinements.

The seller (who restored the bike) is our friend Johnny Bohmer, multiple Guinness World Record holder and owner/driver of the BADD GT, the world’s fastest street legal car. Iconic has known him for years and he has listed several bikes with us – he has been avidly racing cars and motorcycles since the early 1970s and has a soft spot for Kawasakis.

Essentially a scaled-down version of Honda’s legendary RC30, the VFR400, or NC30, was a race-bred 400cc superbike introduced in the late 1980s. A smaller and cheaper alternative to the VFR750R, the 400 still possessed the same bodywork and livery as the 750, as well as its stellar reliability and fit and finish which had become Honda hallmarks.

The VFR400 was created for the Japanese domestic market, though it was officially sold in parts of Europe for a time, albeit in limited numbers. Produced until being phased out in ’94, the NC30 wasn’t ever sold in the US, though grey market examples have found their way to US shores.

These unique wall art tanks are produced by Parc Ferme Moto Art. The artist has been a good friend of Iconic’s and Bike-urious for over a decade and has produced an extremely unique and limited production run of gas tank wall art available exclusively through Iconic Motorbike Auctions. The art piece measures 35″x24″x9″ and our transport department estimates shipping from our warehouse in Santa Monica to the continental US be around $150 via Fedex ground. The seller states “This is an original VFR400 NC30 fuel tank that had some rust that could not be overcome, and with the internal plastic vent setup using a liner is not really an option, so it was repurposed here to showcase the classic Type 1 VFR400 brilliance.”

Yep… Back at our new building and we are FLYING along!

Insulation is set to be complete today or Monday. Electrical early next week. Alarm system wrapped up by mid next week. Camera set up by mid next week as well.

I’m trying to find time to put the carpet in upstairs myself but we will see. I’ll come back tomorrow to assemble the compressor shed and start bringing the racking in from our hangar.

Most certainly one of the fastest renovation projects I’ve been a part of but super exciting to see the daily progress.

Next weekend is gonna be CRAZY as we have 30 ocean containers to move over a 3 day period into @pinaprops & @iconicmotorbikes . That’s gonna be interesting but who doesn’t love a challenge 🙂

My wife has her whole team working hard @pinaprops to get ready for the “container mezzanine” move in. Thank you so much Pina peps!!

Closing 5th for Iconic Friday was sold primarily in Japan; a rare 80s Honda three-wheeler great for an assortment of uses! This Gyro’s from 1985 and it’s available for bid until 2PM PST with NO RESERVE on iconicmotorbikeauctions.com

Introduced in 1982, the Gyro series of scoots are three-wheelers (one in the front, two in the back) where the body is able to lean up to 40 degrees compared to the rear axle. GYRO is actually an acronym, which stands for “Great Your Recreation Original”. Well, the translation’s not great, but you get the idea. The initial designs were for utility-based uses – so options included rear racks, canopies, and plenty of storage.

In 1984, Honda mixed it up with the release of a variant called the Road Fox. Most of the utility disappeared, and instead you got exposed frames and a chopper-ish rake. It only sold for two years – and this was the sole variant that was officially exported to the US. In America, Big Red marketed it as the Gyro S.

The Gyro featured a parking brake which prevents it from falling over when parked, and even a limited slip differential. The short importation period and poor sales have made the Gyro a collectible scooter – perfect for someone looking for something quirky and fun. It only weighs 140 pounds, and it was capable of 30 miles per hour thanks to the 4 horsepower engine. In addition, the Gyro was capable of 160 mpg, which is why it saw so much success as a tiny utility vehicle in Japan.

The seller purchased the bike November 2022 through an Iconic auction. The odometer shows 818 miles.

Finishing up for the Iconic site 4th Friday’s a 900SS that has a unique upgrade; it sports a 916 tail section! This iconic Ducati’s from 1996 and it’s available for bid until 1PM PST on Iconicmotorbikeauctions.com

Ducati offered two versions of the 900SS – a full-fairing (SS/SP) and a half-fairing (SS/CR). In this piece on Cycle World, Peter Egan says that this 900SS is “the used motorcycle you need” and notes that “they made perfectly comfortable long-distance touring bikes, but on winding roads through the Black Hills, they metamorphosed back into sportbikes of deep finesse, with killer, real-world midrange and light, intuitive handling.”

Mikuni carbs fed the air-cooled 904cc air/oil cooled V-Twin which was good for just under 80 horsepower. Combined with a dry weight of 414 pounds and classic Ducati styling, the 900SS was quite the commercial success – almost 28k of them were sold over a seven year run.

Maintenance:
In preparation for the listing, the seller had us perform a safety inspection, our service department performed the following maintenance in January of 2024: carb clean and sync, carb rebuild, replaced diaphragm cover, replaced timing belts, changed the oil and filter, brake/hydraulic fluid flush, tires changed, front brake pad replacement, repaired front turn signal, rebuilt clutch slave cylinder, replaced oil seals. The GPX750 of the late 1980’s was no slouch in terms of power, and it even won Cycle World’s award for best 750cc streetbike in 1987 and 1988. Still, Kawasaki saw potential with a new class of Ninja using the 16-valve liquid cooled inline four from the GPX and in 1989 launched what would become one of their most iconic models. The ZX-7 was a completely new bike with a perimeter style aluminum frame, adjustable suspension, 17″ wheels front and back and a tweaked 750cc engine putting out a solid 105 horsepower.

Unlike the rare homologation specials released by other Japanese manufactures, the ZX-7 was an affordable 750cc bike that was available to everyone – racers and street riders alike. The ZX-7 was a really good road bike right out of the crate, but with some special parts and a bit of work it could be made into a very competent race machine, and for many years the bike saw incredible success on the race track. 1990 saw significant revisions to the engine and bigger carbs bringing more power, and a new swingarm changed the wheel base. 1991 ushered in a freshly restyled J model ZX-7 with more engine improvements, an inverted 43mm front fork, and a lighter frame.

The seller purchased the bike four and a half years ago from a private collector and states, “I was looking for a nice original ZX-7 and found this one in Quebec offered by another collector in 2020.”

During his ownership the seller has covered approximately 300 miles. The odometer shows 19,148 kilometers (11,898 miles).

Per the seller, “Cleaned carburetors, installed new battery.” The seller has provided a condition report, which can be found in full on the auction site. According to the seller the bike is stock and includes two keys.

Starting in 1978, Kawasaki won 4 consecutive 250cc World Championships with their KR250 racer – its most notable feature was the “tandem twin” engine which had one cylinder behind the other and two cranks!

This helped keep the bike narrow as the engine was slimmer and both headers could exit on the same side, but it required liquid cooling to ensure that the rear cylinder did not overheat.

The 45hp engine was paired with a six-speed transmission, aluminum frame, triple disc brakes, anti-dive front end, and one of the most distinctive taillights of the 1980s.

The owner sent the bike to Iconic from Japan. It’s prior history is not known. The odometer shows 10,574 kilometers (6,570 miles).

Maintenance:

The 1990s were defined by three sportbikes – the Honda CBR900RR, the Ducati 916, and the Yamaha R1. Honda’s CBR900RR started the revolution by being 76 pounds lighter than its lightest competition. Soon after, Ducati released the 916. It was technically competent with fuel injection and even an adjustable steering head angle, but it’s best remembered just for being one of the most beautiful motorcycles of all time. In 1998, Yamaha released the R1 and wiped the floor with everyone else – it was the lightest and most powerful literbike available and you had to work hard to find a dealer with one in stock. Over 20 years later they’re still fantastic machines, so here’s your chance to relive the glory days.

Yamaha was able to make the engine/transmission much smaller by vertically stacking the transmission shafts. Further space was saved by putting the water pump inside the engine cases. The packaging let Yamaha shorten the wheelbase and still lengthen the swingarm, which made the R1 feel like a 600cc bike but with 1,000cc power.

The seller is the original owner and purchased the bike new and states, “I have the second place winner at the 2004 Grand National Roadster Show. It sat for many years on display at restaurants.” The odometer shows 2,963 miles.

Per the seller, “It underwent recent tuneup and maintenance.” The seller states, “It has a complete top to bottom redo of all body panels, tank, exhaust, front fender and holders, PVM wheels, side covers, headlight, taillight, and brake rotors. All body work done by Evan Wilcox. Bike design by Robert Steffano.” The sale includes the owner’s manual, and repair documentation.

Launched in 1983, Honda’s XL600R was a hit with buyers much like the 500R before it. Sold for many years until finally being replaced by the long running 650L, the street-biased big thumper from Honda gave lots of riders a bike that not only could perform well both on and off the road but also had the looks of a motocrosser that many people desired.

Usually adorned in Honda red, this 1987 was an offering of the classic red, white, and blue scheme that has been a mainstay for many Honda models over the years.

A testament to Honda engineering is the fact that so many of these 1980’s era XLs are still on the road and in use today, clean ones are hard to find since many saw offroad duty, but Honda loyalists have managed to keep some very nice examples both in and out of collections over the years.

The seller has covered approximately 349 miles in 18 months of ownership. He states “I purchased this bike from the original owner, who is an acquaintance. It is in remarkable condition for its age and is great fun to ride. I get tons of thumbs up and discussions at almost every gas stop. It has always been pampered and was only mildly ridden off-pavement by the original owner. The reason he sold it was to buy a bike he could thrash in good conscience. I have only ridden it on the street, except for one brief excursion through the grassy parts of a local park. Recent back issues make it difficult for me to kickstart, and I wasn’t riding it much to begin with. If I had more room or fewer bikes, I would keep it just to look at and take out for an occasional spin, but this thing is too nice to not get more attention than I can give it right now.”

Here are some photos of the new Aprilia RS 660 and the even bigger news is the new RS 660 Factory specs.

The short version…. The RS660 gets new winglets (seems like one big wing to me), it gets a new color instrument cluster, launch control and increased HP to 105.

The factory is especially cool, for an additional $2350 USD you get fully adjustable Ohlins suspension and exclusive factory edition graphics.

Priced at $11,649 and $13,999 in the USA.
