Additional photos of this KTM 1290 Super Duke R are available here for your perusal.

Campaigned by Rennie Scaysbrook (the current Pikes Peak motorcycle record holder), this Team Cycle News/KTM USA KTM 1290 Super Duke R was the machine he raced in his rookie attempt. He earned pole position and an eventual fourth place in the 2016 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with this KTM.

The machine is a 2015 model with just 3,780 miles on the clock, most of which were put on the road prior to this machine being converted into a racebike.

Rennie is the Road Test Editor for Cycle News – Team Cycle News headed KTM’s first appearance at Pikes Peak in 2016 as a joint effort, where they took a long term press fleet 1290 Super Duke R and converted it into a racer using KTM’s PowerParts catalog. Everything was documented during the build, which you can read here. Additional stories about Rennie’s experience can be found at this link.

The KTM has been kept in storage since the 2016 event, save for one track day and one single day race event, both at Buttonwillow in early 2017. In July, this year, it was sent to Rennie’s 2019 Pikes Peak crew chief, Jeremy Toye at Lee’s Cycles in San Diego for a full service to ensure a clean bill of health.

The motorcycle (VIN: VBKV39402FM916366) has been fitted with the following parts, as raced:

• KTM PowerParts Akrapovic EVO titanium full exhaust
• KTM PowerParts race map (done in house at KTM USA at Murrieta, CA).
• K&N air filter
• KTM PowerParts SAS removal kit
• KTM PowerParts rearsets
• KTM PowerParts CNC-machined upper and lower triple clamps
• KTM PowerParts WP Racing steering damper
• KTM PowerParts race bodywork
• WP Racing fork cartridge kit and .90kg springs
• WP Racing competition rear shock
• Two Airtech race belly pans
• Drive Systems chain and sprocket kit
• New Pirelli Supercorsa DOT race tires

Also included in the sale are two spare sets of wheels with discs (one of which is a pristine set of Dymag carbon fiber wheels) and all street gear including bodywork, lights, pegs, and exhaust to take this back to what would amount to one super gnarly streetbike.

The 2016 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb saw Scaysbrook and this KTM 1290 Super Duke R qualify on pole as a rookie, only to hit the outside barrier at Elk Park during the race run. As such, there is a graze on the left frame downtube. In the crash, the motorcycle went between the hay bale and the Armco and did not tip over. Scaysbrook immediately climbed back on, ultimately finishing fourth overall and second in the Heavyweight Class. You can see the crash for yourself in the documentary Cycle News put together on the race. You can fast forward to 6:45 if you don’t want to watch the whole video, but you really should, but you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t watch all of it:

This is a chance to own a piece of KTM American racing history — the first 1290 Super Duke to race the iconic Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and the first machine that the current record holder raced with. The machine was been cared for with the utmost respect, and it’s current owner would like to see it go to a worthy home. This would make an excellent AHRMA V-twin, Clubman or Heavyweight racer, or an absolutely amazing streetbike with nearly all the parts you could possibly want in a Super Duke already fitted.
