One of the last models Benelli created before they were acquired by the Qianjiang Group in China, the Tornado Tre has one of the most distinctive styling cues in motorcycle history: yellow radiator fans under the taillight.
The fans weren’t just a unique styling touch – they were the result of a deliberate decision to move the radiator under the seat instead of the usual position up front. This allowed Benelli to make the front end narrower and make the steering geometry sharper. Another interesting touch was the use of aircraft-spec glue in conjunction with screws to secure the four trellises of the frame together.
The 898cc inline triple produces approximately 134 horsepower at 11,500 rpm and 74 lb-ft of torque at 8,500 rpm, good for a 11-second quarter mile time and a top speed of 167. The motor was paired with 50mm Marzocchi USD forks, Extreme Tech monoshock, Brembo brakes, and an Arrow exhaust. Early models had some fueling and reliability issues, but by 2004 Benelli had just about resolved everything.
This example has a very low VIN (ZBNB3TRB45P100004) and it has just 198 miles. This Benelli has the updated ECU mapping and a new fuel pump was installed before we acquired it as it had been sitting for quite a while. Cosmetically, flaws are limited to tiny scratches on the left lower fairing and a small chip in the rear corner of the seat cowl. As of late, this Tornado Tre has been residing in our private display collection, wowing lucky visitors with its visual presence. We’ve always wanted to take it for a spin, but we figured we’d let the next owner cross the 200-mile threshold on the odometer!
