Description
Additional photos of this sidecar-equipped YSR are available here for your perusal.
Introduced in 1986, the Yamaha YSR80 is a much rarer big brother to the YSR50, a popular miniature motorcycle that even surprises knowledgeable motorcyclists when they discover the bikes can be plated and legally run on the street.
The 79cc two-stroke motor was good for approximately 8-9 horsepower, and it was paired with a 5-speed transmission, front disc/rear drum brake, and styling that truly made it feel like part of Yamaha’s sportbike family. The 1986 model was offered in two color schemes: red/white and blue/yellow.
Even more rare is a matching sidecar for the blue/yellow model, as found in this listing. This one’s a bit of a mystery to us as the history is not well known – and there’s probably a lot of history as it shows a healthy 39,457 km (24,660 miles) on the odometer. It’s incredibly charming in its current state but there are some issues – the bodywork of the sidecar is not completely secured, and there is a large repaired crack and several scratches throughout. The metal handles on the rear of the sidecar exhibit heavy corrosion.
Bodywork on the YSR is much nicer. The bike starts and runs, though the motor will likely need some top end work soon. Our White Glove service would be glad to take care of this for the buyer at a very reasonable price. An upgraded large Brembo caliper has been installed up front to help with the increased weight from the sidecar.
This YSR would make a fantastic restoration project for the winter season. The parts needed to rebuild the top end are easy to source and quite cheap while the difficult to find parts (such as the body, tank, and wheels) are all there and complete.
We are not able to identify the sidecar, and we apologize that we don’t have as much of as the history as we normally do, but we couldn’t help ourselves when it came to sharing a YSR with a hack! Feel free to come on by the shop to check out this rig in person and we’ll do our best to answer your questions.
