The Ducati ST4s was first revealed in 2001 at the Munich International Motorcycle Show (Intermot) held in Germany. The ST4s was a sport-touring motorcycle powered by a 996cc L-twin engine powerplant, good for roughly 117 horsepower and 75 lb-ft of torque. With a detuned superbike motor based off some of the most iconic superbikes of the time – the 996, 998, and the 999 – the ST4s was a popular choice for those interested more in the ‘sport’ side of sport-touring.

A couple of decades ago, our pal Wendell Phillips of Lockhart Phillips created a faster version of Ducati’s sport-tourer – he called it the ST4R. Ultimate Motorcycling featured it in 2006 and while the bike has evolved since, the highlight was (and still is) the motor.

“Though not visible, the most alarming modification on the ST4R is its full-on Superbike motor built by Apex Predator Racing’s Quentin Wilson, one of Eric Bostrom’s old race technicians. SPS camshafts, Bucci high-compression pistons, titanium connecting rods, a ported head, larger injectors, a custom Arrow exhaust and an STM SBK slipper clutch only scratch the surface of the powerplant modifications.”

This example is VIN: ZDM1TB5T22B006243. The frame has been powder-coated making the VIN stamp difficult to read.

The odometer shows 20,879 miles.

In addition to the modifications mentioned above, the Ultimate Motorcycling calls out “a Penske rear shock with a RCS titanium spring moves the ride height up an inch for improved turning and clearance.”

“The Options Italia Arrow exhaust system joins a stainless steel midsection to a carbon fiber cannister for the desired exhaust tone and performance.”

“Race Tech reworked the fork internals to help accommodate the increased performance. A Toby steering damper stabilizes the ST4R’s higher speeds.”

“Visually, the color scheme is inspired by the HMC Ducati 749 Formula Extreme racing motorcycle, as evidenced by the red powdercoated frame, anodized black swingarm, and clear-coated black matte paint on the fairing. A Lockhart Phillips tailpiece conversion moves the ST4R’s styling cues even farther into the sporting realm.”
