1996 marked the debuted of the third generation of Honda’s legendary CBR900RR – Honda tweaked the suspension and chassis for more torsional rigidity, changed the position of the clipons and the size of the shape for a more comfortable riding position, and bored out the motor an additional 1mm, increasing displacement to 918cc. Power went up by 8 horsepower and 3 lb-ft of torque at the crank (130 hp, 68 lb-ft), and the dry weight dropped by over 6 pounds to 401.

Adorned in the rare purple/yellow/white factory livery, this 1996 Honda CBR900RR (VIN: JH2SC331XTM000601) is absolutely loaded with upgrades. Per a previous owner, “the goal of this build was to keep the motorcycle’s looks to resemble a factory 900, no ugly chrome or custom paint. To the untrained eye it looks completely stock but it is an absolute MONSTER.”

It starts with the motor, which was blueprinted before the cylinder head was milled and polished with an increased compression ratio. It also features Two Brothers cams with adjustable sprockets, a heavy duty clutch, and aluminum radiator fan. It breathes through a modified airbox with UNI foam filters, is fueled by the stock Keihin 38mm carbs with a Factory Pro jet kit with 140 mains, and exhales through a full two Brothers 4-2-1 exhaust with titanium hanger and carbon fiber round canister. This CBR is claimed to make 134 horsepower to the rear wheel, and have 28 pounds of unsprung weight removed.

Two Brothers also makes the machined billet upper and lower triple clamps with 5mm more trail. The forks were revalved with heavier springs and emulators by Stig at PPS Suspension. There are steel braided brake lines front and rear, and the stock rotors are bit down on by HRC pads. There is an AFAM lightweight gearset (15/43) and a 525 DID gold chain.

The swingarm has extra bracing/welds and a custom billet bottom linkage for the monoshock, and it’s connected to the frame by a Fox twin-clicker aftermarket shock. The front wheel is from PVM and the rear is a 6″ wide Marchesini with cush drive – both were made in Italy out of magnesium.

There is also a purple Zero Gravity windscreen, EMGO mirrors, aftermarket cam chain adjuster, flush mount front signals, aftermarket rear signals, some titanium bolts sprinkled in, and basically unused tires with a 2315 date code.

The gauge cluster and horn were removed by a previous owner – the seller replaced the gauges with a used part, though the mileage reading is incorrect. Based on documentation from previous owners, we estimate that this bike has covered approximately 6,000 miles in total. Our White Glove service can source an OEM horn for the new owner.

The seller acquired this CBR in an eBay auction in September of 2010 and it was part of a collection of bikes he was riding, but a recent life changing accident has changed his priorities. It was a runner but has been sitting for a few months since the accident, and would be a runner again very easily. Our White Glove service would be glad to help with that if desired. It is offered on a clean California title and is currently on non-op registration. The bike is currently at our Santa Monica location – please make an appointment if you’d like to see this motorcycle up close!
