Built to take on the Honda CBR600F and the Kawasaki Ninja 600, Yamaha’s FZ600 was, as Cycle World put it in a 1986 review, more of an “evolution, not revolution.” But even though it wasn’t built from scratch, Yamaha had enough excellent components laying around – most importantly, the engine from the FJ600.
When it was all said and done, Yamaha had a pocket rocket that was reliable, cheap to run…and weighed 33 pounds less than the Ninja.
Plus, how could you not fall in love with that red/white/blue livery and the dual headlights?
This example (VIN: JYA2AY00XGA000852) is offered by legendary racer and our buddy, Steve Rapp, who has used it solely as a display piece in his collection.
The odometer shows 2,473 miles.
We did a full detail as the bike had some dust buildup but it now looks as new. We were asked to quote getting it 100% up and running but after the cost of tires, a battery, carb work, and a detail, Steve just decided to sell it as a collectible show piece as he’s decided not to keep her after all.
As such, it is currently not in running condition. The next owner can decide if he or she wants to put an in an exhaust, tires, new jetting or just leave it for display – our White Glove service would be glad to assist with.
This is the beautiful start to a long lineage of Yamaha sportbike such as the FZR and the YZF-Rx, and it’s very well-preserved as a slice of Yamaha’s history.
