In 2012, Beta’s dual-sport line (RS) was offered in three flavors: 350, 450, and the big boy 520.
If we’re allowed to oversimplify, the 520RS was basically a 520RR (Beta’s off-road racer) with the minimum required to be street-legal – turn signals, mirrors, and a license plate holder.
That’s why this Beta’s performance in the dirt is still excellent – you’ve got components like Nissin calipers, 45mm Marzocchi forks, fully adjustable Sachs shock, and a healthy 12.6 inches of ground clearance.
The engine is a 497cc, DOHC four-stroke, paired with a siz-speed transmission and 14T/45T final drive gearing. From a Cycle World review, “Once running, though, the power is pure bliss, just the right amount all the time. The 520 is quicker than a 450 yet doesn’t go overboard with the big-bore, big-stroke feel. Broad, user-friendly power tractors up cliffs and over rocks from a dead stop with relative ease–and in the next breath, it’ll charge right up the biggest sand hill you can find.” Claimed dry weight is 249 pounds, and reviewers said it felt much lighter than the displacement would suggest.

The one aftermarket upgrade we note is the Acerbis hand protection, which exhibits expected wear.
We went through it to make sure it’s a runner – we charged the battery and cleaned the carb. Offered with no reserve, this capable Beta is guaranteed to find a new home!
