“What if Bologna made a factory Super Hooligan racer?” That’s what Tom Zipprian (mechanical engineer at Zero Motorcycles) had in mind when he built this custom Ducati Scrambler. We’ll leave the rest of the description to him:
“Winner of the 2019 “Spirit of Scrambler” award at the prestigious Quail Motorcycle Gathering and the Michelin “Design Your Motorcycle” challenge.
This bike started its life as a run-of-the-mill Scrambler Full Throttle that came into my possession after a minor collision left the bike with some bent forks. Being so low in mileage, I thought it better to give it a new life rather than part it out.
By day I’m a mechanical engineer for Zero Motorcycles but by night I’m also a bike builder. All in, I have about 2 years and $25k+ in the build. I finished the bike in time for the 2019 Quail Motorcycle Gathering in Monterey, California, and I’m honored to say that I took home the Spirit of Scrambler award presented by the CEO of Ducati North America!
The greatest compliment I receive on the bike is when someone looks at it and says “what did you even do to it?” but the truth is, there wasn’t a single part on this bike that wasn’t worked over, and I take great pride in the factory look and feel.
Base Vehicle: 2016 Ducati Scrambler Full Throttle
Wheels/Tires: 19” RSD Traction Wheels w/custom hubs & Mitas DOT-approved tires
Brakes: Dual Brembo calipers with 330mm Panigale rotors
Forks: Showa BPF (from a Panigale)
Triple Clamps: Custom CNC w/ Ohlins damper
Shock: Ohlins
Headlight: Custom fiberglass windscreen and LED headlight from Rigid Industries
Seat: Custom fiberglass pan and race foam (over 4 iterations and ~200hrs of labor to get to this point)
Swingarm: Modified Ducati 900SS
Rearsets: Monster 1100 EVO
Exhaust: Custom slip-on (10 pounds lighter than stock)
Engine: New fuel map and dyno tune by Factory Pro Tuning (10% greater mid-range)
Turn Signals: Motogadget
Livery: Alfa Romeo White w/ Custom Vinyl Graphics
As an added bonus, I will offer to design a custom graphic set per the new owner’s specifications.”
Additional things to note about this example (VIN: ML015ANM2GT007936):
The seller acquired this bike in March of 2017 from Copart in Dallas, and has put less than 500 miles on it. The fluids and filters were replaced less than 200 miles ago, and he’s letting it go to finance his next build. He notes that there are no mechanical or cosmetic issues, however the service is light is on and will require a trip to the dealer to get cleared. The odometer currently shows 1,263 miles, and it is currently located at our shop in Marina del Rey, California if you’d like to inspect it in person.
