The 1198R is the rarest of the Testastretta engined bikes: several sources quote Ducati official info that just 70 were built worldwide. Due to the financial crisis of 2008-09, a number of 1098R Bayliss’ were left unsold and so in 2009, US dealers didn’t want to sign up for the 1198R. By the time the bike was first shown, and dealers saw that unpainted aluminum tank and the Corse livery, demand was high, but it was too late to order more and Ducati refused to extend the ordering window.
We’ve heard that only 7 were ordered by dealers in the US. It appears that up to 17, including press bikes, made it over, but fewer than that were actually sold and remained in the US. This bike is #10.
This Ducati has a 17 digit VIN (ZDM1XBHW0AB027276), which confirms it was not originally built to be supplied to a race team. Since it was originally sold new and registered in CA, there should be no issue registering it there again.
It was bought new from GP Motorcycles in San Diego, California – the original owner traded in a 1949 Vincent for it (original bill of sale is included, showing the details and a trade in value for the Vincent of $20,000) in June 2010. He kept it for four years and put only 279 miles on it, selling it in July 2014 to a Ducati enthusiast (and good friend of Iconic) in LA who had the belts changed and a service performed at Pro Italia in Glendale, California.
While it was in the shop he also had CRG carbon levers, CNC clutch cover and rearsets, fender eliminator, and a EVR clutch slave fitted.
It is also equipped with Ducabike frame plugs.
He rode it around LA very occasionally over the next 5 years, along with the other bikes in his collection, including a Desmosedici. The current owner bought the bike last fall with 871 miles on the odometer. He had the belts changed by the head tech at Pro Italia before taking delivery, as they were 5 years old. The bike currently has 885 miles on the odometer.
This bike has never been dropped or tracked. And of course, it’s still running in. There are no visible marks, dings or paint chips anywhere on the bike.
The original take off parts, manuals of bike cover were not present with the bike when the current owner bought it but it does include the tool kit, both keys and the key code card. It is currently located in Wayzata, Minnesota and is offered on a clean Michigan title (original bill of sale included). The seller is only letting it go as he is moving back to the UK to retire. This likely is the lowest mileage and most gently-treated 1198R left on the planet.
