Replacing the legendary 916, the 996 was Ducati’s flagship superbike from 1999-2002. The gorgeous Tamburini-designed aesthetics remained, but upgrades like like larger pistons and valves, a stronger crankshaft, lighter wheels, and better brakes all combined for an improved riding experience. For the 2000 model year, the 996 also got Marchesini 5-spoke wheels and titanium nitride-coated forks.
The seller of this example acquired it in early May from a private party in Massachusetts with approximately 7,400 miles on the odometer. The previous owner was a motorcycle mechanic who worked on all of his own machines – before the sale he adjusted the valves, changed the oil, installed a new lithium battery, and replaced the timing belts (at 7,375 miles).
The previous owner acquired the black wheels.
The bike has never been crashed or laid down, and the original bodywork is yellow. The previous owner “bought the current bodywork/gas tank from someone else and decided to swap them with the yellow for a change.” The current owner has the original yellow bodywork but will be selling it separately if the next owner is interested.
The odometer now shows 7,553 miles.
There are several additional upgrades, including a few carbon fiber pieces – the swingarm cover, rear fender, chain guard, heel guards, and air intake.
Termignoni exhaust, which has been ceramic coated.
Ducati Performance clutch, aftermarket open clutch cover, and frame plugs.
Aftermarket front turn signals.
The seller “flushed the coolant and replaced the coolant tank about 25 miles ago at Ducati Newport Beach as the old tank developed a small leak. The service guy also took the bike for a spin at the time and said that the bike is in great shape. The brakes have plenty of life in them. At this point the bike needs absolutely nothing.” The seller already has another 998S and he’s letting this go to make room for more motorcycles – he also just sold a Honda CBR900RR here on Iconic to free up some space.
The sole cosmetic issue appears to be flawed finishes on the mirror housings.
We also note a deteriorating boot for a sending unit wire under the steering stabilizer.
Featuring a distinctive green livery and great upgrades, this custom 996 needs nothing but a new rider.
