For 2012, Yamaha updated their legendary R1 superbike with a 7-mode traction control system, updated fueling map, and new shock.
All of the updates were designed to allow the average rider to take more advantage of the 180 horsepower, crossplane crank inline-four engine.
With that said, the seller of this example (VIN: JYARN23E1DA016005, Engine #: N520E-021223) is no average rider – it’s AMA road racing legend, Daytona 200 winner, and our good buddy: Steve Rapp.
Steve acquired it from a Yamaha dealership in Virginia approximately eight months ago. It was on consignment by the original owner who barely rode it and traded it in on a new machine. The odometer shows 1,682 miles.
Steve was planning on making it his personal street bike that he could also enjoy on the track, but “seeing as I haven’t gone to the track since I bought it and I figure I won’t be going any time soon it’s time to clear up some space.”
Steve prefers more grip on the tank while on the track, which is why he installed this tank pad. We guarantee that there are no flaws underneath it and we will remove it for next owner if they wish.
It is also equipped with a FlashTune ECU Quickshifter (currently set up in reverse pattern/GP shift).
Earlier this year, Steve had a mechanic put on a new 520 chain and sprockets, as well as a Motion Pro 1/4 turn throttle.
In June, he had us install a windscreen and mount/balance new Dunlop Q3+ Sportmax tires front and rear.
Now he just needs us to find it a new home. Please note that Steve has it on a California title but the registration is “in suspense” as he hasn’t yet had a CHP/DMV inspection because it’s an out of state bike. A California buyer would just need to take the bike to their local CHP/DMV for an inspection (it has a Federal Emissions sticker so the 7,500 mile rule does not apply), buyers from other states do not need to do anything different than usual.
