In 1991, Honda split the base and SP models of the NSR250R with the introduction of the SE (Super Edition) model. They had all of the SP goodies (dry clutch, adjustable suspension, special livery) except for the magnesium wheels.
In 1994, the Japanese firm updated the NSR with an all new model dubbed the MC28. The result was arguably the ultimate 250cc street bike in Japan thanks in no small part to the PGM-IV ignition and Pro-Arm single sided swingarm. Also notable was the memory card used to start the bike.
The only changes for 1996 were in the colorway, but it was the beginning of the end for the legendary machine as the R model was discontinued.
This example (VIN: MC28-1202288) is part of the estate sale that you’ve probably seen us mention on Instagram. It is one of approximately 15 bikes that had been sitting in a barn-type environment in Ontario, California for years and it’s one of the jewels of the collection.
The odometer shows 252 kilometers (156 miles).

This NSR was sitting in the corner of the storage space with a cover on it, and the owner had unfortunately lost the PGM-IV card. Our White Glove service had to disassemble the dash (which contains the ECU) and send it to Australia to get it reprogrammed for a new card – this took about 3 months.
A two-stroke lover himself, Olly was a huge fan of this bike so we put him on it and he brought it to life. In addition to the PGM-IV work, Olly cleaned and sync’d the carbs, flushed the brake fluid, flushed the transmission oil, flushed the fuel tank, and replaced the petcock, air filter, and battery. The total service bill was approximately $2,300 and it now runs as good as it looks. If you plan on riding, we’d recommend that you budget for new tires as it’s currently equipped with the OEM units – the seller wanted to keep it as original as possible.
Currently located at our facility in Santa Monica, California (please make an appointment for an inspection) this NSR is offered on a Bill of Sale only. The owner believes he imported it approximately 20 years ago, and it’s what started his addiction (and collection)!
