Americans typically think of the Bandit as a 600 or 1,200, but Suzuki also made them in 250 and 400 variants – the latter of which was exported to the US for only a couple of years.

When the 400 Bandit was offered to the US for the first time, Cycle World said “as a styling exercise…it may be the most exciting bike of 1991, regardless of country of origin.” A couple of decades later, and it still looks interesting. Suzuki first created the model in 1989, but the US wouldn’t get it for another couple of years. By that point it cost $3,699, made approximately 55 horsepower, and weighed just 419 pounds with the tank full. Other basic specs included a 114 mph top speed and fuel economy of 42 mpg – you can check out the Cycle World review here.

It’s a hard-to-find bike that reminds some of a baby Ducati Monster thanks to the trellis frame, but this is a much rarer sight on American roads.

The seller of this example (VIN: JS1GK75AXN2100924) bought it eight months ago as a COVID project.

The odometer shows 8,838 miles.

He got most of the work done but was having trouble getting it to start, so he sent it to us to wrap it up and make it a runner. He invested in an oil change, new tires, a new chain, new spark plugs, new air filter, new igniter box, and a carb rebuild.

Unfortunately, it still had trouble starting. Further diagnosis revealed that the motor is suffering from low compression (cylinders 1 to 4: 140/70/90/170 psi) and has some loose valves. At this point the seller does not want to invest more into it and is selling it as-is.

The side covers and a new air filter with the igniter box are included but not pictured.

Cosmetic Blemishes: there are some general scuffs and scrapes – phots of all known issues are included in the album up top.

Currently located at our facility in Santa Monica, California, this Bandit is offered on a clean California title with registration current through April 2021.
