Designed to be the ultimate 996 at the time, the SPS (Sport Production Special) is an incredible combination of performance and beauty. The limited edition SPS was an uprated version that featured a modified engine and chassis. Nearly all the specifications were improved such as the lighter 5-spoke wheels…
…and Ohlins rear shock.
In 2000, Ducati upgraded the Showa forks to Ohlins units, as well.
Engine work included titanium connecting rods, upgraded cams, and a lightened crankshaft. The SPS also got a bigger generator and Termignoni pipes. All this was good for an additional 12 horsepower, and the modified chassis made the whole package that much sweeter. Technically, you weren’t supposed to enjoy said package on the street – the SPS was only road legal in Europe. Ducati didn’t conform to EPA regulations, so they sold it as a ‘track-only’ bike and made buyers sign a waiver saying that you wouldn’t register it for road use. As you might imagine, pretty much everyone ignored the waiver, as the bike came with a VIN, lights, a title, and everything needed to register the bike.
This example (VIN: ZDM3SB5V9YB003233) was originally sold by Moto Europa in Richmond, Virginia (now called Richmond Superbike). The current owner acquired it approximately six months ago from a private party in Nevada who was having shoulder surgery, who in turn purchased it from Illinois.
It is #1214.
The seller has covered approximately 500 miles during his ownership, and the odometer now shows 4,975 miles.
Modifications:
This SPS is highly original – the only modifications are a Ducati Performance carbon fiber tank protector and EVR carbon fiber water tank.
The sale includes the original tool kit, owner’s manual and two keys.
It also includes the pictured genuine Ducati Performance rear stand – please note that Haul Bikes will not take this as part of a regular shipment and the buyer will need to pay for separate shipping via FedEx or similar if they would like the stand as well.
Recent maintenance records include:
July 2019 @ 3,985 miles – Hall’s Cycles in Springfield, Illinois: new NGK spark plugs, air filters, battery, and fuel level sensor. Oil/filter change and new belts.
September 2019 @ 4,005 miles – Major Powersports in Las Vegas, Nevada: oil/filter change, fuel system flush, coolant flush, brake/clutch fluid flush, new Dunlop Q3+ tires, and battery tender install.
October 2019 @ 4,005 miles – Major Powersports in Las Vegas, Nevada:: install EVR carbon fiber water tank ordered from BellissiMoto
September 2020 @ 4,615 miles – Desmoto-Sport in San Francisco, California: soon after the current owner took possession, the rear brake got stuck on during a ride and caught fire. This service replaced the rear brake rotor, caliper, line, and master cylinder.
Cosmetic Blemishes:
The seller notes two scuffs on the tail and one on the carbon fiber front fender.
He notes that “some radiator fins are bent commensurate with the mileage” and “overall the bike presents exceptionally well.”
He adds that there are no known mechanical issues.
Currently located in Orinda, California, this SPS is offered on a clean California title with registration current through September 2021.
The seller is letting it go as he needs to fund some renovations on a new home. He sums it up by saying, “hopefully the new owner will ride it regularly, this bike is a sweetheart. It has an old school analog feel to it that just isn’t available on modern superbikes; still decent power and performance by modern standards and the looks and sound to die for. Truly an iconic motorcycle.” “Have any SPS stories or questions about this listing? Let us know in the comments!
