Now in its 28th year (with a substantial redesign for 2021), the Monster was an instant classic that kept Ducati afloat – from 1993 to 2000 the Monster lineup was 42% of Ducati’s sales.
The first model was the M900 of 1993. It was famously a parts-bin special, but the styling was a hit with customers. The Monster combined the air-cooled SOHC engine from the 900SS with the frame from the 888, which yielded 67 horsepower and 60 lb-ft of torque, more than enough for a bike that weighed just 407 pounds.
The seller of this example (VIN: ZDM1RC4N2PB000814) acquired it approximately 18 months ago on eBay from a private party in Southern California.
During that time he’s covered “50-ish” miles. The odometer shows 3,245 miles.
Per the seller, “this is one of the first early original Ducati Monsters to be imported to the United States. It was first sold at Pro Italia and was, at the time of purchase, adorned with all the specialty parts available. I should say few specialty parts were available and the dealer, Pro Italia, was instrumental in the crafting some of these accessories.”
Modifications:
“Locally crafted carbon fiber bikini fairing and windscreen, this was before Ducati had even thought to make the accessory and in my opinion is infinitely cooler and more sleek.”
LED digital rev counter with carbon surround housing.
Marvic Pentastar cast wheels with I believe 851/888 snowflake rotors and Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa tires from 2017.
FCR flat slide carbs with new PX foam air sock.
WP steering damper.
Corbin seat.
Ohlins adjustable rear shock attached to a new billet swing arm hoop (added 1″ seat height).
Carbon fiber fenders and Staintune full exhaust system with specially made light weight carbon mufflers/end cans (please note that at the time bike was new carbon fiber anything was in it’s infancy and these were quite rare).
Billet rear sets with integrated muffler hangers, open clutch cover.
Billet aluminum kickstand.
Adjustable front suspension.
Superbike bend bars, Domino grips.
Recent maintenance includes an oil change, new battery, tires, and the adjustable forks/shock. He also had the carbs cleaned by Iconic Motorbikes. He states that the only mechanical issue to note is that there’s no choke so it’s a bit cold-blooded when starting.
Here’s what he had to note about the cosmetics: “Ah, yes the major feature of this bike, it has a hot rod flame paint job! This was an upsell option that Pro Italia provided along with all the added parts and was made slightly more famous by a similar bike they had done for Lyle Lovett. It’s not to everyone’s taste but I felt that the history and assemblage of parts makes this a historic early model Monster 900 with So Cal flair.”
Cosmetic Blemishes:
Currently located at our facility in Santa Monica, California (please make an appointment for an inspection) this M900 is offered on a clean California title
with non-op registration.
