The first generation of the Aprilia Tuono was a bit of a revelation – as Jerry Smith put it in a Motorcyclist magazine story, “Buried deep in the mission statement of every road-going sportbike is usually the requirement that some measure of civility be maintained so the bikes don’t scare off potential buyers like snarling dogs in an animal shelter. The design team at Aprilia that penned the specs for the Tuono missed that memo.”
Much of this was due to the engine – unlike most sportbike/standard pairings of the day, the Tuono’s V-twin mill wasn’t down on power from the engine found in the RSV Mille with a claimed 128 horsepower and 76 lb-ft of torque.
In addition, the comfortable seat and upright ergonomics afforded by the bars meant you could enjoy the Tuono for mile after mile without the usual pains that come from extended rides on sportbikes.
“In 2003 it was quite a shock to the system and nowadays it remains brilliant fun to ride.”
The seller of this example (VIN: ZD4RPC0584S000424) acquired it three years ago from a private party on Craigslist.
During that time he has covered approximately 8,000 miles. The odometer now shows 43,371 miles.
Maintenance during the seller’s ownership includes all fluids, spark plugs, rebuilt stator, clutch master cylinder, rear brake master cylinder, rear brake rotor, rear pads, and speedometer sensor. There’s also a new Dunlop rear tire with less than 5 miles on it. Work was done by Santa Monica Moto Club, Moto Republic of Eagle Rock, and Iconic Motorbikes.
Modifications:
Ohlins rear shock.
Rizoma front blinkers, clutch reservoir, bar ends, mirrors, and ASV levers.
Aprilia carbon fiber front fender (original included).
Not pictured are a lithium battery and upgraded battery terminal cables.
Cosmetic Blemishes:
The seller notes that the bike was low-sided by a previous owner and there are scratches on the frame and swingarm.
He adds that there are “nicks and cracks associated with 43k miles.” as well as some pitting on the front forks.
The sale includes two keys, the original front fender, air intakes, and a bellypan.
Currently located at our facility in Santa Monica, California (please make an appointment for an inspection), this Aprilia is offered on a clean California title with registration current through June 2021.
The seller is letting it go as he recently purchased a 2017 Aprilia Tuono Factory. Have any Tuono stories or questions about this listing? Let us know in the comments!
