The last in the long line of Yamaha’s RD series, the RD400F (also known as the Daytona Special) is considered by many to be the best of the model line.
The press went nuts for it – Cycle magazine called it “Dennis the Menace on Yokohama tires, and is the most fun street motorcycle currently available for sale.”
Compared to the RD350, the extra 50cc brought a lot more civility. The engine was more flexible, though you could still easily wheelie the bike in 2nd gear.
It was the perfect example of how the RD series had evolved from a hooligan’s toy into a more refined, but still enjoyable, sport bike.
This example is VIN: 2V0-001742, Engine #: 2V0-001742.
The odometer shows 8,104 miles.
The seller purchased it roughly 15 months ago from Kaplan America. Here’s a video from them about the bike and the long list of work they performed (96 hours of labor plus parts = $12,358) before selling it as the original owner signed the bike over to his son in 1983 and the bike sat for 37 years.
The engine was rebuilt and repainted by Jeff Castine of All Sport Cycle.
The bodywork is original and the tank has been repainted and clearcoated.
Modifications:
Russell stainless brake lines.
BikeMaster Superbike GP mirrors.
The tire date codes are 1019 and 1019.
The sale includes the original owner’s manual, warranty guide, purchase paperwork, and the original title from 8-13-79.
Currently located at our facility in Santa Monica, California (please make an appointment for an inspection), this Yamaha is offered on a clean California title with registration current through May 2022.
