Since the introduction of Ford’s F-150 Raptor in 2010, the pickup (which has been described as a “street legal trophy truck”) has garnered lots of fans and sold incredibly well. While it saw a short two year hiatus during 2015 and 2016, it came back stronger than ever for the 2017 model year with a completely new frame, body, and engine, amongst other improvements. A truck like the Raptor could be considered overkill for your typical consumer who will mostly use it on the street but when one considers the conditions of the average Southern California roadway the Raptor starts to make sense, potholes and rough broken pavement are eaten up with ease, and the faster you drive it the better it performs! When the road ends, the Raptor really comes into its own, so much so that a nearly stock 2017 Raptor completed the Baja 1000!
The 2nd generation of Ford’s Raptor debuted in 2017 and has continued to build on the success of the original SVT creation that began in 2010. The Raptor was based on the best selling F-150 but featured many tweaks from Ford’s Special Vehicle Team that set it apart from anything else that was mass produced and commercially available. A 5.4 and 6.2L V8 mated to a six speed automatic were drivetrain options with the smaller 5.4 liter engine being dropped early on in favor of a high output version of the 6.2 Boss engine that became the standard power plant. With over 400 horsepower on tap, the Raptor had the power to back up its aggressive looks and take advantage of its widened track and upgraded suspension.
Beyond just the usual styling cues and marketing fluff about off-road packages that normally exists in the automotive industry, the Ford Raptor actually utilized top shelf Fox Racing suspension components in all four corners with internal bypass shocks featuring external reservoirs that gave the truck over 11 inches of travel in the front and 12 inches in the back. To take advantage of the dampers, new leaf springs had to be designed in the rear and an all new front A-arm suspension setup was ordered. The track was widened by seven inches and ride height raised by two, necessitating all new bodywork that had nothing in common with the standard F-150 save for the headlights. It came standard with a rear locking differential and 4:10 gears, you could spec it with an extended cab or as a SuperCrew 4 door. Originally offered in only four colors, Ingot Silver was added in 2011, interior options were limited but it came well appointed falling somewhere in the middle of Ford’s XLT and Lariat trim levels.
Of the major revisions that the 2017 2nd gen Raptor received, the most notable may have been the new twin turbo 3.5 liter V6 that Car & Driver described as “bonkers”! While some decried the move away from the V8, the boosted V6 mated with a new 10 speed automatic has proven to be more than capable. In addition to new power under the hood, upgraded electronics let you take advantage of all 450 horsepower and 510 ft-lbs of torque with multiple drive modes including Sport, Mud, and Rock Crawl, among others. The electronics are not just under the hood but also on Fox’s new Live Valve electronically adjusted shocks that are paired with the Raptor’s drive modes. The new V6 also sips less fuel than the previous naturally aspirated V8 if you can manage to drive the Raptor like a normal person. The second gen Raptor also saw NVH improved which results in a quieter cabin at highway speeds both on and off the tarmac. The new aluminum body and interior improvements alone justify the price tag, but when compared to your average new pickup price for everything the Raptor offers it starts to look like a bargain.
