Introduced in 1977, the BMW R100RS instantly redefined what a sport-touring motorcycle could be thanks to a reliable motor, quality factory luggage, and a groundbreaking fairing. As MCN puts it in their buying guide, “the fact that the R100RS remains one of the most practical long-distance mounts to this day is testament to the brilliance of [Hans] Muth’s wind-tunnel-designed, nine-piece, frame-mounted fairing that transforms the underpowered boxer engine and conservative chassis into a serious touring package.”
In 1985 (after BMW was pressured into keeping the boxer engine alive), the RS came back as a Monolever (one shock). It gained a few other updates – a smaller carb, smaller valves, upgraded front suspension/brakes, and a slight shift in the powerband for more torque at the expense of top end horsepower (as well as lower gearing to complement said shift).
This example is VIN: WB1046602J6247269. The seller acquired it in April 2020 from the individual who restored this bike. “I bought it from the person who personally restored it in California and brought it east about 15 months ago. I have taken it for a few sunny day rides but that is it.”
During his ownership, the seller has covered roughly 500 miles. The odometer shows 16,688 miles.
The previous owner acquired the bike in 2016 and then performed what the current owner calls a “concourse quality restoration with every item restored or replaced.” The bodywork was repainted in Alpine White from DuPont with custom graphics “inspired by the contemporary BMW RS logo” and the frame was powdercoated in satin black.
The heads were rebuilt by Ted Porter’s BeemerShop, the cylinders were recoated in Nikasil by Millennium Technologies and the transmission received an upgraded output shaft circlip as well as a Oshmo-reconditioned driveshaft.
The front master cylinder and calipers were rebuilt and the hard lines were replaced. It is riding on Continental Classic Attack tires.
All connector pins in the electrical system were cleaned and de-oxidized, and the wiring harness was rewrapped in braided nylon.
Wilbers progressive springs and Ikon rear shock.
EME adjustable voltage regulator.
The sale includes the OEM luggage.
The seller notes a burn mark in the seat cover.
Currently located in Sag Harbor, New York (please make an appointment for an inspection), this BMW is offered on a clean New York title.
