When Yamaha debuted the RZ500 (known in some other markets as the RD500) in 1984, it was arguably the first production race replica. Built to emulate Kenny Roberts’ YZR500 factory racer, the RZ500 was the closest thing two-stroke enthusiasts had to a GP competitor for the road…as long as you didn’t live in the United States of America. Emissions rules put in place by the EPA prevented Yamaha from selling the RZ500 in the US, so the select few we get to enjoy had to be imported (typically from Canada).
Manufactured in May 1984, this example is VIN: JYA52X002FA000492. The seller is the original owner, he bought it from Hurst Yamaha in Toronto. He is letting it go as he can no longer ride.
The odometer shows 42,324Â kilometers (26,299 miles).
“The carbs were completely adjusted and reset recently, both the front and rear sprockets and chain were replaced just over a year ago. The bike has received all periodic maintenance and it recently had the chain, air filter, spark plugs, brake fluid, antifreeze, and oil replaced.”

Cosmetic Blemishes:
“The right rear decal is covering a paint chip, when I tried to remove the decal I noticed some of the paint was coming off with it so I left the decal on.”
“The plastic around the left front signal was cracked in 1990 due to someone bumping (walking) into the signal and I had the plastic upper fairing professionally plastiwelded at that spot, but did not have the little area repainted, merely applied a CanAm decal.”
The sale includes one key, the original tool kit, and the owner’s manual.
