While Yamaha’s YZ250 usually commands most of the limelight, its little sibling — the YZ125 — is an equally impactful motorcycle. In fact, the two share the title for the longest production run of any dedicated dirtbike. First introduced in 1974, they’re still being made to this day.
And here’s the thing: even though the YZ125 is a smaller, more approachable bike, it’s no less of a competitor. On the pro level, Bob Hannah made the plucky 125 famous as he battled Honda’s Marty Smith for the American National Championship. 1976 marked Yamaha’s first title in the 125 Pro class, after which it continued to dominate until 1979.
Since that time, the YZ125’s success has been spotty at best, with several wins here and there alongside one championship in 1992. Even still, the bike is a regular sight on the regional circuit. As Dirtbike Magazine describes, “it was more of a people’s bike and remains the 125 most likely to win at the local level to this day.”
Compared to its predecessors, 1983 makes for a much-improved example. It boasts the liquid-cooling of the 1981 model but without the ungainly fork-mounted radiator or poorly-positioned shock linkage of the 1982 model.
This example is VIN: 24X008903. The seller acquired it two years ago from a friend who restored it. He states that “this thing is truly a terror when it comes on the pipe.”
Because there is no odometer, true mileage is unknown. However, the seller notes that he has put less than two hours on the engine since the rebuild.
Maintenance:
The seller states that this YZ125 underwent a frame-up restoration in which the engine was overhauled with new top and bottom ends and the carb was rebuilt. Accordingly, all fluids have been changed. Moreover, it sports the following new parts:
– Sprockets
– Chain
– Spark plug
– Air filter
– Radiator shrouds
– Shift lever and cable
– Brake lever and cable
– Stainless steel bolt kit
– Handlebars and grips
– Tubes and tires
– Fork boots
– Front and rear fenders
– Number plates

The shocks have not been rebuilt; however, the seller is including the parts kit in the sale.
Modifications:
The bike comes with an aftermarket DG expansion chamber pipe and silencer, though they have not been installed.
