For every major motorcycle manufacturer with an established brand reputation, there are countless others whose stories are clouded by the passage of time. One such marque is Chang Jiang, an upstart Chinese outfit that operated under the China Nanchang Aircraft Manufacturing Company during the latter half of the 20th century.
The 750 you see before you was Chang Jiang’s effort to build a military-ready motorcycle. Early production was based on a reverse-engineered Zündapp KS 500; however, once the Soviet Union abandoned the IMZ M72 (a clone of BMW’s 1938 R71), the Chinese acquired all of the tooling needed to manufacture the bike for themselves. They named the model the Chang Jiang 750, using leftover parts to construct something that was virtually identical to its German and Russian counterparts.
Come 1966, Chang Jiang introduced an update to the 750 in the form of the Type II engine and gearbox, also adding modern amenities like a reverse gear, an electric starter, and some dash-mounted switches. Power-wise, the OHV four-stroke flat-twin was good for some 30hp, though it wasn’t widely adopted until the early 1970s. With the excess of Type I parts still in circulation, it made more sense for the military to swap out the engine and gearbox when the bikes came in for service.
The CJ lineup got an update in 2017 with water-cooled 650cc engines from CF Moto. Chang Jiang still offers sidecars and claims production of 2,000 units/year. Once China opened its doors to imports in the 1990s, the 750 quickly became obsolete amongst a flood of foreign competition.
This example is VIN: 940293, Engine #: 93110028. The seller acquired it 2005 from a friend who imported the bike from China.
During his ownership, the seller has covered approximately 1,000 miles. The odometer shows 5,179 kilometers (3,218 miles).
Maintenance:
In preparation for the listing, the seller had us clean/sync the carbs, install new carb/intake boots, and install a new Yuasa battery.
