After the legendary 1994 RC45, Honda took a lengthy break from producing a limited-production special for the US market. In fact, it took two decades before Honda would try something similar – the Honda CBR1000RR SP. Honda built 5,000 units to sell worldwide, only a few hundred of which came to America. For an additional $2,700, riders were rewarded with a tremendous amount of upgrades including 43mm Öhlins NIX30 forks (fully adjustable), Öhlins TTX shock (fully adjustable), Brembo front brakes with four-piston monobloc calipers, and Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SC tires.
Come 2017, Honda introduced not one, but two race replicas: the CBR1000RR SP and the CBR1000RR SP2. Though similar bikes, the SP2 was a special homologation model limited to just 500 units worldwide. Accordingly, Honda distinguished the bike with carbon pattern insets and gold striping in the paint. What’s more, it was first of Honda’s road bikes to feature a titanium tank and the first of Honda’s four-cylinders to come with throttle-by-wire control. As if that wasn’t enough, the SP2 came with a set of gold Marchesini wheels, and it could be fitted with an exclusive race kit only available to select teams.
The most prominent difference between the two models, though, had to be the engine. While both bikes were based on Honda’s tried and true 189hp, 999cc inline-four, the SP2 boasted a stronger, more robust top end. Along with stronger pistons and more room in the head, it also came with larger intake valves, exhaust valves, and elongated spark plugs à la the RC213V.
As MCN found in its review, “admittedly, road-biased rider aids aren’t the best on track, but the SP2 more than makes up for it by being ridiculously light, fast, smooth and has quality running through it like an HRC flavoured stick of rock.”
