In 2015, Yamaha decided to challenge the small bike establishment with their release of the R3, and the end result was impressive. Sport Rider opened their review by simply saying it was “worth the wait.”
Thanks to a 321cc motor, it was faster than the competition coming from Honda and Kawasaki, and it quickly became Yamaha’s best selling motorcycle in the US. Beyond being an approachable option for beginners, it also became a popular platform for ~300cc racing.
Basic specs for the R3 were 41 horsepower, 22lb-ft of torque, and a curb weight of just 373 pounds. Stopping power for the little twin came from a 298mm disc up front and a 220mm disc at the rear, paired with two-pot and single-pot calipers, respectively. In order to provide confident handling through turns, Yamaha fitted the R3 with a set of 41mm KYB forks along with an adjustable KYB shock.
As MCN found in its review, “The R3 is a credible, genuine, practical sportsbike that has the ability to entertain even the most sceptical old goat of a motorcyclist.”
Manufactured in September of 2017, this example is VIN: MH3RH06Y3HK017275. It was accepted as a trade-in by our friends at Bartel’s Harley-Davidson, so the history is not well-known.

Currently located in Santa Monica, California, this Yamaha is offered on a clean California title with expired registration. Per the DMV website, it would cost $250 to make registration current through January 2024.
